On the hills to obr right is New Town, in front of us is what remains of the ancient parts of doubtful if a more t think, has been the home of so many celebrities as this little street leading from the palace to the castle. In the y days of Scottish independence it was the home of most of the Scot tish nobility, 'and perhaps a slight glance at the general appearance of these buildings will not be amiss. One jn impressed with the depth of the ir- lar walls. The architecture if it will bear a name is somewhat after She Norman style. The windows are Small and deep set. The doors are narrow and bear above them crests or coats of arms, sometimes inscriptions sve placed above the doorways as the following above the door of Knox's house will e lify : Lofe, God, Abofe, Al, And, Y\, Nychtbowr, As, ¥i, Sell. On the fronts of many of the houses are what is termed out- side stairways leading up to the se- cond flat, the ascent being along the side of the house. These cumbrous "forestairs" are almost _inyariably built of stone: In some of the houses is a secret stairway by which the in mates could escape if necessary. Some too contain draw wells to supply wa- ter to the household. On our way to the castle the first part of the street is known as the Canongate. This name formerly de- sf ted a "burgh" distinct from Edinburgh. This burgh, founded by the canons of Holyrood, soom became the "'court quarter." Chambers wrii- ing of its says: "It has borne upon its pavement the burdem of all that was beautifol and gallant, and all that has become historically interesting in Scot land for the last seven hundred years." Canongate is considered a "wynd"' or wide wtreet; off from it at right angles run "closes" or marrow streets, some of them so narrow that a "buss' or wide waggon could scarce ly enter. Many of these in are built ever the top. If one should en ter some of the deep narrow doorways opening on the closes, I was told, he might find two families oecupyin, single room, but I saw es poverty 'even on the Canongate. woems almost a sacrilege toewee these hali-starved, half-naked beings peering out from the very rooms where no- bility has dwelt, or moving about the streets where society once flourished. But seciety found more commodious quarters in New Edinburgh, while the vemoval of the court to London in 1707 carried away most of the no bility. Passing up this street we see Queensberry House, where the poet Gay once lived, as secretary to the Duchess Catharine, and the Acheson Mansion, where Lady Jane Grey spent a fow days. Then coming to the Can- ongate church, erected 1688, we enter the churchynrd and view the graves of the Poet Ferguson and Adam Smith, author of he Wealth of Nations." Memorial tablets remind us that they lived and died, but their works live after them. Passing a little farther up the street we come to Moray House, formerly the residence of the great Earls of Moray. In 1648 Crom" a of It el gateway called the Netherbow Port; now the name only remains and marks the beginning of High street We pass Knox's house, and Hynd- ford's close where Dr. Thomas Chal mers lived, and find ourselves viewing well took up his quarters here.
