Inspectors Will be Sent to the Borders -- Alleged That the Foot and Mouth Disease Ex- ists There. London, Feb. 11.--The hoard of ag- riculture recently received an applica: tion from the Mexican government to admit live Mexican cattle at British ports. The government made an inves- tigation with the result that the gov ernment - application was refused and Mexican cattle prohibited from land ing. The government learned that the foot and mouth disease exists in Mexi co, and also that Mexican cattle have been coming to Great Britain through the United States. It is understood that communications on the subject have been exchanged between Right Hon. Robert William Hanbury, presi dent of hoard of agriculture and Se cretary Wilson, of the United States agricultural department, and that as a result the latter will send inspec tors to Texas, Arizona and the whole Mexican border to stop this traffic. If the disease exists it is expected that United States will bar importations of Mexican cattle. According to the Chronicle there was much chatter in the city a short time and an Early Grave. The international Sunday school les son for February 15th is found in | Corinthians viii, 1-13. The date is in the spring of the vear AD. 57, and Ihe golden text In our last les Corinth, and the voted to temper to the be applicable to us the place is Ephesus is Romans ,xvi, 14 son Paul was at present lesson 1% d ance. Paul's admor lievers at Corinth ar to-day. Now, as then, one ought not always to indulge in that which he joels sure is pericctly harml beneficial, hecausey our shows, his exampl work injury | to others. The question is as to how far one should go in denying himseli that he may. not be a stumbling block to others. 3 Recall from the study of a week ago what sort of a city Corinth was, and think of the many questions of prac | tical everyday conduct that would be trouble a handful ons ax may apt to of Chnist- | jans living in the midst of so many pagans. This letter of Paul to the | Christians in Corinth was a reply to a letter from them in which they had | told of their difficultics and asked his | counsel. One of the questions they asked him was what to do about eat ing meat that had been offered before idols. The markets were full of it, | for the iste could cat only a part, and sold the rest. Some held that it was wrong to eat it, for it seemed to them like taking part in heathen wor ship, and others held that it made no dificrence. Those who did not eat | looked down upon those who ate for | indulging in what they consider questionable practices Those who ate, believing that it was not a question of right and wrong at all, looked | down on their brethren jor being so | superstitions as to think that the | foolishness of offering a piece of beef | before the statue of an imaginary di | vinity made it wrong to eat the beef | The letter to Paul had probably boasted "knowledge," and the broad- | er of the two views just mentioned. | Paul checks that boasting. Knowledge ix not to decide, but love. After the | question, "What theory as to this meat most reasonable 7" is this | other, "What course of action would | be most kind and helpful ¥7 Heart, not brain, must decide i | | | is Raul clearly takes the side of the more liberal and broad minded Corin thians, and holds that the thing in it Idols self is not wrong are nothing and the previous experience of the meat we eat has as little to do with the religion of Jesus Christ as the price we pay for a pound of it. Paul | would have his converts be liberal ! and enlightened; he would have, them glory in the liberty they have in the gospel. Paul does nat stop there. There is not in all men that knowledge, that insight, clearness and breadth of view, which Paul and some Corinthians have attained, Some of those who had been idolaters were unable to shake off the feeling that in using meat that had been a part of an idolatrous, ceremo nial, just as they had done before con- version, they were compromising with idolatry, They, too, knew that idols were nothing, but felt that this was wrong. Conscience protested, and to disregard conscience is sin. Broad minded freedom is good, but it must not meake one forget to be kind; it does not justify scllishness In theory, Paul was most liberal, in practice, most conservative for the sake of others. In settling all que tions of right and wrong, now as then, there 1 the greatest need of charity, love, unselfishness. The Chri tian must not simply ask. "How does this matter look to me ? Would it do me any harm 7 but "What would be best for all concerned ?"' We may feel that it is best to give up some things for the sake of others--not that we are governed be their consciences--but simply that the giving up might help them. It may sometimes seem best to wait Paul knew that it was only a question \ of time and clear thinking when his own more liberal view should be pre vail. He was willlhg to wait Right and reason are bound to win, and the Christian can better afford to have charity and wait, than to ride rough <hod over even the unreasonable scru ples of his brethren. The fesson tea h vst I. "Knowledge puffeth up, but love buildeth up." Better love without knowledge than knowledge without love, 2. It is not «0 much a question of what one may do, but what is best and wisest for him to do 3. Better gite up any pleasure than to indulge in it to some one's undo ing 1.
