It was the death of this child. that turned the Standard (il magnate's at- tention to the absolute inability of the medical pfofession to cope with the disease that annually carries off many thousands of infants, and re- sulted in the plans for the establish- ment of the laboratory and hospital that is to be built in New York. Stillman of this city, whose friends are arranging for a celebration to- morrow his eighty-fourth birthday, enjoys the distinction of being the first engineer to run a locomotive on the Chicago & Alton railroad. r, Stillman began his railroad career at the age of sixteen with (he Boston & Albany, when that road wes only twenty-five miles long.
