Against the Cremation of Bodies --If This Had Been Done The charged with the murder of three wo men was, yesterday, aad 'sentenced to death. In the course of his summing up Justice Grant Hamm commented on the fact that if crema tion had been the law of the land," it would have been impossible to bring the charges home to Chapman, as no- thing would have remained of his vie tims to show that they had been pois- oned. He hoped that the people who convivlod favored cremation 'would take this as a warnihg. tt > Chapman, charged with bgving pois- oned a young woman, whd lived with him as his wife, was arrested about three months agh. An autopsy show- ed that the woman had been poison- ed. The bodies of Chapman's first and second wives, who had 'died within a few years were then exhumed and were also found to contain poison. A fourth woman, a Pole, claimed Chapman as her huskand, and said his name was Klosowski. Chapman at first claimed that he was an American citizen, but failed, to produce proofs. Gleason, widely known during his life time ax the mayor of Long Island City. When Gleason died it was gene. rally supposed that nothing remained of his wealth, which a few years be- fore had been considerable. Stocks, bonds and other securities are supposed to make up the volume of Gleason's sup posed concealed wealth. * He placed implicit confidence' in bis lawver, 1 P. New York, March ;20.~The Tri: bune's London cable %: There are persistent and apparently well ground: edd rumors of cabinet dissiisions over 3 the Irish land bill. It is asserted that Mr. Chamberlain is opposed to mak- ing large treasury grants for covering the balance between the landlords' sell ing price and what the tenants think they can afford to pay. H these' be truth in the reports, which have come to me from Irish landlords, a govern. mens crisis cannot, be | deferred. Premier Balfour could Nally hope to carry the land bill, even with the help of the solid nationalist vote, if Mr. Chamberlain were unwilling to identi fy himself with the measure, nor could Mr. Wyndham expect to satisfy either the landlords or John Redmond's fol- lowers if Mr. Chamberlain were insist. ing upon cutting down the grant. The artist was as busy ' as the romancing reporter and the racy story is written around double column pictures of a girl of surpassing beauty in evening attire and a smart looking student with hair parted in the cen tre and the latest thing from the tailor"s that flarvs out like a lily at the waist. Arthur D. Trevellyan is the young man's name, and Violet Bedward the girl's. It ix one of thoss quaint] pathetic stories of intense ha. man interest, over which women are supposed t6 sob. The drawing shows Trinity Cathedral, where the lovers were to have been married, the univer: sity in the distance and the weeping lovers, who are supposed to have just been made aware of their blood rela- tions. The public is regaled with @ all the details of how Miss Bedward, "whose father is a high official of the Canadian government," became a prime favorite at the Government Honge levees, Sir Oliver Mowat's resi. dence and other aristocratic homes" | No details are lacking to give the story an up-to-date romantic tinge.
