On this property are three veins, vary: ing in width from three feet to forty feet, 'and on these eight working shafts have been suitk. The deepest shaft is four hundred fect, and the vein, which gradually widens, has shown a steady yield of $8 per ton during the fivd years that it has been worked by the present © proprietors, whose entire plant shows that the superintendent is a master of hig busi- ness, The reduction works consist of a mill of thirty stamps, driven by com® pressed air.to the extent of 700 horse: power, futnished from Deer Falls, over two miles distant, and conveyed in & twenty-inch pipe. The ordinary mill process is supplemented to a coftain extent by the cyanide process, and the result. has proved very satisfactory. All the shafts are connected by tram* ways with the crushing mill; the pre- mises. and. mines are lighted hy elec: tricity, and everything that skill 'and ingenuity can suggest or devise for the economical and efficient working of the mine seems to have been done. Mining men are proverbially difficult to' ohtain information from, but it has been learned on very good author: ity that the amount of rock crushed is some eighty tons per day, or about 2,000 tons per month, giving at $8 per ton, $20,000 per month. a On the company's property are two or more veins of mispickel. but no steps have as yet been taken towards their development, Their importance to the locality of the company's operatious is shown by the fact that a prosperous village has grown up near their worke, It already contains two stores, two churches (Presbyferian and Methodist), a black- smith shop, and other small indus: tries. Cordova, as the village is called, is distant nine miles from Havelock station, on the CG. P.-R. The Belmont and Northern railway is alos. quite close td the village, Preparations are belag made for the revival of work in some of the long- closed "free gold" mines in. the dis- trict, and it is probable that the pre- sent. may be a very busy year in the Hastings mining region, v DEATH OF MRS. SHAW. Passed Quiekly Away Alter a Brief Illness. After a life of unselfishness, useful ness and charitableness, extending over four score years, a highly 'est citizen, in the person' of Mrs. Shaw, laid her burden at the fopt of the Cross "and 'was sumc to the throne of the Master for Whom she had so long labored," there to enjoy the peace reserved for those 'who have served faithfully in His vineyard. The late Mrs. Shaw, relict of the late John Shaw, for many years cor oner of the city, was born in Armagh, treland, in 1822, her maiden name be ing Agnes Thonspson. She came to Canada with her parents in 1840, set: tling in: Kingston, where she continued to make her home until death claimed her. In 1851 she married John Shaw, who pre-deceased her in 1585. She is survived by four children Mrs. W. Skinner, ex-Mayor J. Mor: gan Shaw, Misses Jennie and Minnie at home. She was the stepmother of Rev: William 1. Shaw, D.D., of Wes leyan Theolofrical College, Montreal; and Mre. Henry Skinner. The deceased wat a member of the Sydenhare Street Methodist church ever since it 'was op ened for worship. : The late Mrs. Shaw was & person of untiring energy in behalf of church work and charity, until advancing vears compelled her to relingnish to a certain extent the work in which she took such a deep interest. She was one of the most arduous workers in. the congregajgon of Sydenham Street Me thodist church. Her charity was un. bounded, and self sacrifices she count. od as naught. She was a person high Iv esteetned by all who had the plea sure of 'her acquaintance, and her name will long be remembered, The late Mrs. Shaw had a wonderful ly strong constitution and was scarce: Lly ill throughout her life. The illness which led to her demise was of less than a week's duration and consisted of 'general breaking up of the consti- tution. At The Police Court.
