L Mr. Folger then stated that on the two holidays : named picnics for chari- table purposes were to be held at Lake Ontario Park, antl it would be unfair to oppose them, as failures might en- 'sue to all undertakings, instead of sue- cess, \ Chairman McCammon replied that he had been spoken to for the use of tho grounds upwards of a month ago, before he had been approached by the Street Railwdv company. Mr, Nickle asked the chairman to oroduce -the application of the base- ball: club, which organization. be un- derstood, was seeking to seoure use of the grounds. The speaker accused the chairman of 'conniving' against the Street. Railway company. whose = ap- plication for the grounds had been fyl- ed with the city treasurer two weeks ago, hut .the committee had igmored te The company's application was in eloven days before that of the base- ball elub; and five days beiore the club was formed. At the: last: meeting ' of the committee the matter had been tliscussed and the press representatives had been: asked to keep the discussion out of the papers. The whole game, had been given away by Chairman Mc Cammon. Alderman Hoag came to the defence of the chairman, and said that Mr. Nickle had no right to_abuse that dig nitary, The chairman said that he had been spoken to on March 26th, with refer- ence to the grounds. It was a matter of first: come first served. Mr. Nickle ofiered to bet $20--which amount he had on deposit. with the 'city 'treasurer along: with his applica: tion for the grounds-that the com- aanv's application: had been made -in writing two weeks before that of the baseball: club. A long and heated argument follow: ad; in which Mr. Niekle offered, in: the event of scouring the grounds on thé two days named, to give:them up to the city in the event of a circus or wny similar attraction desiring to use them. He was not "bucking" the base: ball club, or any other: organization, and as proof of thig pointed 16 the fact that he ' had: 'applied for the grounds © long before the club was formed. Asked what inducements the com: »any had offered the club to play all matches at Lake Ontario Park; Mr. Nickle repliod $8 a match. He asked the committee to figure: out how much money could be taken 'at the cate for twelve consecutive: meitches, such as the club proposed to play. He hal had experience and knew pretty well what it would cost to run - a team: While not having promised to sw the club; fmancially. he had pron. to give it all the help possible. - The avesker also referred fo the fact that Kingston had enjoyed many big cele brations owing to the generosity of the Street Railway company, and had it not been for this aid, the celebra. tions would not have taken place: He thought this ought to have 'some weight with the committee in dealing with the question. The committee musi remember that it was dealing with citizen against citizen, and fair treat ment should he accorded: He had con sulted with the city solicitor in the matter, and, had acted upon the ad vice of that official. | Alderman 'Hong definéd his nosition as being a representative of the citiz- ens, toc look after their interests. He was' onnosed " to the 'Street Railway company securing control of the fai- grounds on the two holidays named, and shutting 'them up. to the detri- ment of other citisens who might want to use them. © chairman promised to take Mr. Nickle's application into considera- tion. Work For The Police. There are a great. many ways in which the police could make them selves useful for the benefit of the city while on their' . patrols, if they were' only given 'instructions. As is well known there - is a very strenuous dock fight on the St. Lawrence 'rivet, between the Thousand Island company and the Visger com- pany. By the decision of the referce just handed down, the Thousand Is- land company secures control of the Fine View dock, which if they receive a like privilege at Thons:ud Island Park, will effectually gut oti all other local companies from landing paseen- gers at Thousand Island Park. The company already has control of the New York Central dock at Clayton, obliging other companies to land their passengers at the upper dock and by the above decision they get control of the Crossmon and Cornwall docks "at Alexandria Bay. The Round Island company, it is understood, have refus- ed to grant exclusive dock rights to any one company. The: Visgers, it is said, hold that the route ldading to the Crossmon dogk at Alexapdtia Bay is in reality a public highway, although it has not Been used as such in recent years, and a 1i- tigation i* now pending to open the highway If they. are successful in this the recent decision of the referee will not affect them as the site of the Crossmon dock will be public proper- ty. The outcome of the fight will be awaited with interest by people along the river. : "The report 'of the: meeting given'out by the trustees was that they had de- cided to grant the same privileges as to ticket selling as ware in force last year 4a the Thousand Island Steam- boat company end the New York Cén- tral, but no snecial .. privilegés, are granted in regard = to the docks, all companies having equal rights in land- ing there, 4 i - A committée was appointed to fur nish "the néw hotel, Welesley, which is to he'built at Thousand Island Park, the contract for which has al- reaily heen: let. «Off Colourp Practically the' whole speaking population Blt world. keep themselves byusing pe | Will make old furniture | look as if ne 3 will cover uy all scratches.
