Ottawa, May 7.~The railway com mittee of the House of Commons. met to-day to consider' the long anticipat- od and much-talked of Grand Trunk Pacific bill. The) bill names Senators Cox and Gibson} Col. Pellatt, ER Wood, 'of Toronto; J. R. Booth, of Ottows; Hon, H. B. Rainville, ©. M. Hays, 1 Frank W. Morse and William Wainwright of Montreal, as promoters of the new system. Fhe capital is sev enty-five millions; and power is SC to build and operate a line from Que- bec via Gravenhurst or North Bay, norih-westerly and westerly, orth of Lake Nepigon, to Winnipeg; thence westerly and north-westerly through or near Battldford, Edmonton and Dunvegan, or by sach other feasible route as hereafter located, but follow- ing in a geweral directicn the one des- cribed, and by way of the Peace river or Pine River Pass or such other pass in the Rockies as may be found con venient, to Port Simpson or Bute In let, or such other point between them as may be preferred. Authority is also asked to construct branches to = Port Arthur, Brandon, Regina, Calgary and Dawson City and other branches as proved by the governor in-council. The company desires to issue bonds to 'the extent of thirty thousand dol lars a mile on the section from Que bec to Gravenhurst, thirty thousand on the section thence to Winnipeg; twenty thousand 'on the section thence to the Rockies, and fifty thousand in Mountain section to the Pacific coast. The bill also asks power for the pur- poses of its husiness to operate ves sels, to improve navigation, to hold lands, wharves, warehouses, hotels and restaurants and parks; to develop the land and waterpowers along its route; to undertake irrigation and to carry on. mining, lumbering, iron and steel manufacture, Leighton McCarthy, who has charge J the bill, explained its provisions. He would ask that the, bill be changed 0 as, to develop the northern part of Quebec hy constructing from Quebec, south of Lake Abittibi, instead of arrving the main line as far south as North Bay or Gravenhurst. This will be a shorter line over the eastern part »f the route. He felt that the mecessi- ty was evident for the construction of another line to western Canadé. ~The present weans of communication in that country were over congested al ready The Grand Trunk shareholders were behind this seheme morally; physical: ly and financially. Sir Charles Rivers-Wilson, president of the G. T. R., said the present mea- sure was introduced under the spon- sorship of {he Grand Trunk railwav. A crv had gone up from western Can ada for more railway lines, and the Grand Trunk had decided to meet the amergency, as it was well situated to do 8g. The promoters Fad many evid- enced of encouragement from the pub- lic, and hoped for the unanimous ap- proval of parliament "I give," eaid Sir Charles, "my most emphatic assurance in behalf of the forty thousand shareholders of the Grand Trunk railway that our inten- tion is to carry this project through. We will put our hand to the plough and plough the field to the last acre." Sir Charles was asked whether the Grand Trunk Pacific would undertake to carry its freight to St. John and Halifax in the winter. The reply was that these ports would be given th: preference. He could give no more de fnite answer than this. The Intereol onial connection was there to use. Mr. Galliher-- "Will you go ahead whether vou get the bonus or not ?" New York, May 8.John Farson, of Chicago, was reported in a morming ps being at the Weddor! Hotel. The story of his offer of ¥ 600,000 for a model servant girl had . become known in New York and is ad follows : "Tall and majestic with a gown which had the Paris stamp; she swept through the Thirty-Third street corri- dor of the Waldorf-Astoria and pres- ented herself before the room clerk. My. Farson, of Chicago; 1 wish to see him, 'she said: "Went to Chicago last night," re- joined the clerk. 'Suppose you came to see him about the servant girl propo sition ?' . : : " 'Precisely. For thirty years I've been hunting for the same servant girl he is offering $1,000,000 for and have not found her, 1 suspect that I know something about keeping house. In fact I can do anything about a house except build ong, and I would like 40 talk business with this Chicas go multi-millionaire.' "Saying which, with a faint blush ol embarrassment, she rustled out of the hotel. She was but one of many women, young, aged, motlish, quaint, shy and presumptuous, who called at the Waldorf-Astoria yesterday to see Mr. Parson about his offer to a ser: vant' girl who 'understands her busi: ness. Unless he locks himself in a sale deposit vault it is plainly evident that Mr. Farson is going to be kept pretty busy for some time. Hall of those who sought him to-day declared that they' would start for Chicago at once to see 'him and find out if he meant all he had said. * "While 'the model servant may bea mere fancy, as thousands of house holders believe, New York city has an abundance of persons who modestly confess that they are the climax of excellence. They have taken the Chica go banker seriously, and are going to keep Wind busy. He has said that, like the boy searching for the wonderful key-flower, he - will he constantly watchful. He will read every letter and so for as it is physically possible will talk with every applicant, "The hunt for the million-dollar git] 'has become his hobby. London, © May 8-~This is the dats set. dor the great fancy dress ball which Mrs. Adair, formerly of New York, is to give to inaugurate the London season, and "smart" society is on the qui vive in anticipation of the function. The affair promises to he one of the most notable of its kind seem in recent years and can 'be compared only to the famous fancy dress balls of the Duchess of Devon shire. The feature of the ball will be the quadrilles, each to represent a different nation. Oi these one of the most interesting will be the Irish quadrille, in which the women dancers are to wear costumes copied from gowns worn by the Jrish queens of Tara and the princesses of Tyrconnel, Lady Barrymore has arranged this quadrille, and will, with her debutan- te dgughter, be among those who will take part in it 3 An Instrument Of Utility, © The race horse and the racing bicy- cle each have their uses, and each in turn bears the same relation to the rest of its kind, We hear less of biyele racing today than when the wheel first bpeame popular. To-day the bi cycle is more strictly an instrument of utility. Its usefulness in ecomomizing time, in getting ouickly from place to place 'or as a vehicle of pleasure are all so deeply impressed upon the pub lic and have become so commo . that we scarcely think of them as ex- traordinary.'
