Claimed to Have an Output of One Million Fest a Day -- Views of Ohio Expert--Can Be Sold Cheaply. St. Catharines, May l4-- R. B. Turnbull, Cleveland, O., is in the city in connection with 'the contemplated oil and gas wells in this district, Mr. Turnbull was at Winger, near Fen wick, on Manday, and inspected the gas well which was bored to a depth of 750 feet, and which has mow, itis claimed, an output of one million feet of gas a day. lio states that the pro- ducts ean be piped and sold in this city profitably |at the low price of he- tween thirty amd forty cents per 1,: 000 fest. He is' quite enthusiastic over the prospects of gas and oil in this neighborhood, owing to the fact that it is in the same belt as the Pennysl- bania gas and oil fields, the neigh- bering - mountain being a continuation of the Alleghany range. Mr. Turnbull has: leased 1,100 acres of land in Pel- hani township, and states that if good producing wells abound there the yro- duct can he pied to this citv for $25,000, and that the revenue would re- pay the amount in a few months. e------ INCIDENTS OF THE DAY. HULL INSPECTOR DAVIS Has Won Confidence of Marine Men And People. Since hig appointment as govern- ment inspector of hulls for this dis- trict two years ago, Matthew R. Davis, of this city, has filled that position more than creditably, and has won the complete confidence of marine men and the general public. His impartiality and thoroughness of inspection is attested by his refusal to grant certificates to the steamers Glengarry and Clinton until thorough repairs have been made to weak spots While such' action may be unfortunate for some owners, yet it is such strict marine inspectors that will receive the approbation of the people. Any ves- sel Mr. Davis inspects and grants a certificate, the people may rely upon. It is not every promoter that will Jet a Government off for $60,- 000, Capt. Bernier was greatly heartened by the implied promise, and set out to do missionary work all over Canada. The astronomical tions took a splendid abstract inter ost in his theories of Arctic naviga- tion, nodded their heads wisely, and agreed that Bernier's plans were quite feasible. But beyond a moral support they refused to go. The hard cash did not roll in, and all the captain's hard work and tremendous enthusiasm accomplished in a year's time was to raise about $20,000, and that mostly in small subscrip- tions. R'ch Men Cool. * Although he pointed out to many wealthy, influential persons that Ca- nada had' the best right to the North Pole, as being nearest to it, asd' that a Canadian should have ; the' honor of discovering what has stood for the Golden Fleeca to "many gen srations of intrepid navigators--al- though, in short, the captain all his arts of earnestness and argu- ment, he found the millionaires - her- metically sealed to his adventurous proposition. Ile and Fisheries, who is a Frenchinan, like himself, and who has ambitions, as everybody knows, to enlarge scope of his department. The is~ ter of Marine listens very kindly to Capt: Bernier's deputation, and hints that the captain's dearest wish may be gratified. The captain is so jolly, so patient withak™that nobody finds him a bore. He has abandoned the silk hat as unsuited to Arctic .work, and he now appears in a soft hat, brown and jaunty. THe goes 'about on the coldest days without over- coat or 'gloves. He expands his chest. He glows with warmth, He here is a who runs may read that man who will find Arctic regions as 'tolerable as tropic suns. It is.a mat ter of regret that March was not colder, so that all could see how he stands it. A waggish American Who saw him rushing about in light marching order said to : 'Bernier, if they saw you in my country going overcoat in this weather, they'd think that you meant it, and send you to the Pole." ""'Ah," said the captain, "if they would only believe here I'd do with out a waistcoat!' Making an Impression. And gradually Parliament is com- ing to believe. Bernier"s dash for the Pole will come .up in the House of Commons, and the probabilities are that Canada will jnvite her soul for the nonce by handing the captain a hundred thousand dollars and a God-speed.
