X "The method is to make a small in- cision betweerr two ribs," Dr. Kemp said, "and to thrust in two filigers until they actually touch the heart it self. The heart is then pressed against the ribs; giving it the motion of : the natural heart. At the Mapu time 'a saline solution is i into the pa- tient, and respiration is induced by of a pump invented by Mr. the al sian at the The intubation tube, Tort attached to the pump and own patient's throat as far as the windpipe. "The massage of the heart starts the | human mechanism, so to speak, and the other methods restore the other functions, so that the patient, who was dead, actually lives again. Of course, the vital spark must still be mt, but in the experiments we ve made upon dogs it was shown that even the slightest - pulsation of the heart had cegsed. "In operating upon dogs which had been killed with chloroform we sue- ceeded in resuscitating eleven out of twenty-three subjects. The dogs lived upward of twenty-four hours, though we waited from two to sixteen min- utes after the heart, exposed to view, had ceased to beat." Dr. Kemp declared the exposure of the heart showed' that the dogs had died absolutely, but after the resuscita- tion they mot only lived and were conscious, but some of them walked around, ete., drank and gnpeared per- fectly normal. The fact that their re: co' was not permanent was due, Dr. Kemp said, to the fact that they could not be kept quiet after the oper- ations, as would be possible with hu- man beings. In fact, one dog actually clitnbed out of the box in which it had been placed and tore out the stitelitn that had been made in the wo . "The operatiom itself is really no more dangerous than operating in the left pleural cavity for pus," Dr. Kemp declared, "for the covering of the heart is not removed and the cut made between ribs is so small that very little shock results. Where the opera- tion is performéd, as it has been made by cutting out the ribs and using the hand to manipulate the heart, the shoek is necessarily very severe. "This operation is practicable in deaths from anaesthetic poisoning, op- ium poisoning, drowning, suffocation or in still births. The manipulation of the heart starts the blood circulating and each stroke of the pumps restores the normal respiration." On one of the dog subjects Dr. Kemp said it had been necessary to work forty minutes before life became apparent. Hard or soft corns cured with three applications of Pecks Corn Salve, 15c. at 's. Washington, D.C., May 156.-- The change in the management of the cen- sus office occasioned by the resignation of Director Merriam and the appoint GEN. W. 8S, MERRIAM. ment of S. N. D. During the long period he has been at the head of the census office the affairs of that department have been managed in a manner to defy criticism and it is £ 8. N. D. Hurd, of Toronto, was in New York two weeks ago, and made a thorough examination of the Fowler automatic telephone exchange. He is a practical electrician and in a posi- tion to give an opinion when he de- clares it the greatest telephone inven- tion yet perfected. Tt can be used for any number of phones, from 100 _ to 1,000,000, its capacity being practical ly unlimited. The inventor is now completing a thousand-phone auto- matic exchange, which will®be ready in a month or so, and when that is in working order, the telephone ques- tion, in Hurd's opinion, will be solved. The exchange is in panels of 100 phones, and there can be as many of these panels as necessary. The oper ation is very simple. The phone user first rings on the disc or indicator the number of the phone on the panel. For instance, if No. 2196 was requir- ed, the subscriber rings 'in 21 and then 96 on that panel. The plug, with a sort of Yale lock combination, runs up a perpendicular wire to the 90 r. J line, and then along the 90 line until it reaches 6, when the corresponding combination automatically releases it and it drops into place, and makes the connection. If the line is busy, it rings back to the sender. If the phone is not immediately an swered, or if the party wanted is out, the bell rings five times at intervals, and then rings back one to the call- er. If a line goes out of order, the bell at the central rings continuously until the single operator in charge has his attention called to it, when cuts off the line and has it repaired. Mr. Hurd savs that it is a complete success, and that as soon as this sample plant is completed the general manufacture will be commenced, and automatic exch will come into use all over America. The principle of the mechanism resembles in a general way the ingenious system by which type is automatically distributed in the typesetting machines, which, as those familiar with them know, is al- most as accurate as the solar system, if kept in working order, and not allowed to wear out. When this new invention comes into use, the cost of operating telephone exchanges will be reduced to a mini- mum, and the cost of telephones will he greatly reduced. beau, does work make youse ti Wauken Sleep--Honest, de mere mention of it fatigues me.
