London, May 21.--A break of enteric fever on board the reformatory ship Cornwall, lying off Purfleet has been traced to infected blankets from the hospital camps in South Africa. Further investigation, says the Daily Mail, revealed that many thousand of these blankets had been sold broadcast in the United Kingdom. How they got on the mar- ket has mot yet been discovered. The war office sold none and sent none home. The Cornwall's blankets, which examination showed to be blood stain ed and filthy and swarming with ty- phoid. bacilli, have been traced through their vendors to a White- chapel firm, through which it was learned that they were imported from South Africa. The sanitary authori ties have been warned and. the police are tying to trace the importers. sudden out- To Abate The Evils. London, May 21.--In the House of Commons, last evening, Herbert L. Samuel called attention to the re- ported atrocities in the Congo Free State, and moved a resolution declur- ing that the government of the Congo Free State had violated the under- takings it had given at its inception to~govern humanely and not to per: mit ttading monopolies and requést ing the British government to confer, with the signatories of the Berlin acs, by which the Congo State exists, with {he view of abating the evils. Viscount Cranborn, under secretary of state for foreign affairs, replying, said "he" goverment could not ae copi the motion, as its stood because it condemned the government of a friendly state, without direct evidamce. Eventually the resolution was anani- mously adopted in a modified form, eliminating the condemmation of the Congo State government and Great Britain will communicate forthwith with the signatories of the Berlin act. a in Sale Of Shelley's Writings.
