"There were not more than fifty mem- bers of the legislature present this morning when Premier Ross moved the adoption of the report of commis- sjon on the Gamey charges. He hoped this would not ba considered the chief evert of the session, for uecful and progressive legislation had heen pass ed- The charges made by Mr, Gamey were specific and of swh character as to best be investigated hy logal meth- ods. He reviewed the discussion in the house and again defended the reference to. the royal commission, rather than a committee of the house, The premier then defended the character and im- partiality of the judges and their con- duet. of tha investigation. The charac tert of the Goungal, Blake and Ritchie, who were retained by the province to prosecute Gamey's charges, was suffi- cient to establish that his case been well presented. The premier. first. took up the ques- tion of patronage, Gamey ap- proached 7the government, Patronage was ¢ perquisite of the government, but yet winistérs were responsible for all appointments, and could only re- ceive advice. There was no reason for rejecting Gamey's advice, especially as he had already announced his inten- tion to support the government. The premier quoted extensively from the commi¥sioners' report. On the ques tion of the protest, he showed that this protest was treated the same as all the rest. In an eloquent peroration the prenfer defended the integrity and mor. of the government, paid tribute to the ability and worth of Hon. J. R. Stratton, complained that the per- sonal characters of the members of the government had not 'been properly re- spected by the party 'press, 'and ap- pealed to the opposition, who were as much custodians of the honor of the house as themselves. . The premier moved the adoption of the report, in the following resolu- tion, thus closing this dramatic chap- lin Ontario's political history {4 "That his honor the lieutenant-gov- ernor, having appointed a commis- gion, on the address of the legisla- tive assembly, to enquire into and in- vestigate the charges of bribery sét forth in the statement made to the assembly on the 1th day of March last 'by Robert R. Gainey, mémber- eleet of the district of Manitoulin, and the further statement made by him in the house on the 27th day of March last, and the report of the commis- sioners so appointed having been pre- sented to the legislative' assembly on the 4th day of June, instant, this house adopts the said report and thanks the commissioners for their just and impartial conduct in the matters referred to them." At the cdnclusion of the premier's speech, the house adjourned until three o'clock. i FLORAL OFFERINGS. Additional Gifts in Remembrance of C..W. Walker. The livery owners are objecting to the waterworks' department placing meters on their premises. The water- works' committee is given authority by bylaw, to put a meter on any place in the city should it be deemed expedient. The livery stables have not heen singled out by any means; meters have been put in other places during the past few days! One livery owner says he will let his water supply be shut off before he allows a ar on. There séems to be no alternative, how- ever.
