John Mac 4 able relief, if not with great joy, that REGARDING QUEEN'S ~'BY/| REV. MR. MACKIE. Scores Rev. Dr. Carman--Gen- eral = Assembly's Action 'Was Intervention of Providence. At the Sunday morning service in kie, M.A, in the course of his sermon made a lengthy reference to the action of the general assembly in deciding to retain Queen's University. He said: It must have been with consider- the news was received by you that the general assembly unanimously resolved to retain Queen's as a portion of the church, and to maintain her in offi; ciency as best she could. We feel cer tain that such a decision will not on- ly secure for the university a deliver ance . from _straitened circumstances and a greatly accelerated growth, but will add immensely to the prestige and power of the Presbyterian church in 'anada. So far as we know, she is the only Protestant church in the world, that possesses a university 'of her own, perfectly complete, with the tour ancient faculties, divinity, law medicine, arts and the beginning of af filiated schools, the A variety and = ex tent of which no one can' limit. The trustees of Queen's were a few vears ago led most unwillingly to seriously consider the question of severance from the church that had given her birth, in order to remove the objection of denominationalism, and so secure the helpful recognition of the provincial government, To de this, it was proposed to make momentous changes in the royal charter, namely, to cut out the divinity faculty as pure ly a school of Presbyterian theology; to open the principalship. to laymen and clergymen alike of any church or nope, so long as they professed the Christian faith: to f6ll up the ehancellorship ,in the same wav; to enlarge in an alarming manner the governing. body so as to represent all shades, of religious and political opin- ion; and place the university id al things under the control of the state During the past few months, a bill was carefully drawn up embracing these- changes and others, all of theme believed to have heen contemplated by the late lamented principal, and so having an influence upon many of the trustees which in ordinary circum stances would not have been felt. This bill was introduced to the Dominion parliament a few days ago and actual ly passed its first reading if not its second. The general assembly, how ever, intervened at the eleventh hour and arvested its progress. Why were these changes ever pro posed ? The answer which the late Principal Grant invariably gave to unwilling followers thus questioning him was: "Want of means to develop university work. We have already grown so great and the necessity of further development is so urgent, and we have so entirely exhausted the constituency which the church repre: sents, that nothing more can be ex pected from it; that. there remains no other alternative than that of casting however, with suceess, we must make it easy and possible for the govern ment to take us. up, by changing our selves into a purely unsectariam insti tution." Have you any assurance from the government that after all these changes have been ofiected, the univer", ity will receive the full recognition of the government antl direct and gener ous support ? To this question the principal's reply was always equivocal, and so never satisfactory. He would say : "'Public opinion will compel the government to do justly, should they hesitate, or decline; but why enter tain a doubt of their willingness. Laok at the school of science as a pledge." So the hateful work went om, | it being generally believed that an un derstanding existed between the pre mier of the provipee and the principal of Queen's, for the disclosure of which the time had not yet arrived, but which would be revealed before the last step was taken. The principal passed away before that stage in the proceedings was reached; and the dead cannot speak. Phe premier, howgver. has spoken, and declared that ~ he had po intention whatever of supporting a second uni versity. We do not believe for one mo ment that he ever said that to Prin- cipal Grant. We gwgard the is- suo ms a deliverance: Queen's is infin itely safer gn the heart of Her tested and IMe-long not Jet gven tho in gn hour of perplex outta he. tried oh dopant from them. They will love her 'and cherish her as their own great school of vari vd learning, and the church and . the college, in closer union than ever, will adavnce as one great power in the Do- winion for the diffusion' of sound and solid knowledge, and true and living Christian religion. Still, tho calm satisfaction and lively hopé are: ours, we seek to repel, not, as base calumnies, but as the re- iterated assertion of the ignorant, the charge. that Queen's University = has ever heen a denominational institution in the received acceptation of the term, Within her gites' no creeds have been adopted, nb religious 'tests have 'been applied, no church connection has been demanded. At her governing 'board, men oi different ecclesiastical com: plexion deliberate and mle. Hence in the governing body and the reaching staf, are found in addition to Presbyterians, Roman Catholics, An: glicans, Methodists, Baptists and Con- gregationalists. Her Sunday services intcnded as proof of the spirit that pervades her government and teaching, and as a distinctive recognition of the Chris tian faith, have been conducted by clergvmen of - all denominations, and sometimes even by distinguished lay: wen, Nothing father irom sectarianism could possibly be found. Further in Catholic spirit and practice, no church could possibly go, except to the ob- littration of herself, and we venture to say, that no church in Christendom would ever have even thought of going so far, Queen's has actually gone. Yet must she be called sectarian, and for this reason alone, though stand ing so noble in her Catholic liberality in her comparative poverty, and mar velous manifest work for the country, be § unworthy not merely of the children's, bread, . 'hut even of the crumbs that fall from the government table. Yea more ! soon as it was perceived, that the government's cre ation of a school of science: in King stom, 'a city, but lightly favored by either government, provincial or do minion, perhaps more injured titan favored, by both, was indirectly of advadtage to Queen's, inasmuch as the services of Queen's were absolute Iv needed by the School of Science, unless. professional chairs were dupll cated and large sums of money glat gly, wickedly wasted, loud voices in 'Toronto . were | instantly waised against. it, as against an unfair and iniquitous compact. The loudest of these voices was that of Dr. Carman, regarded as a leading exponent of Me thodist thought, who indignantly de nownced what he « was pleased to phrase 'bogus arram ats," lan guage that wounded the spirit of the heroic principal, battling with his dying breath and in a tabemacle crumbling about him, fom what he be lieved to be not obly he interests, but the rights of the university for which' he sacrificed himeelh Not in him was the voice or the Spirit ef the sectary. How nobly and differently Kingston acted, simply because he knew Queen's better ang -comyecily. Though a city of Methodists and all religious de nominations, twice over she willingly taxed herself for the pugpose of pro- viding suitable buildings for univers silty work, without, the faintest refer- ence to Queen's offensive denominar tionalism, or a #ingle qualm of con- science, By this generous Catholic act of hers, she provided for Dr. Car- man and a portion of Toronto, an ex: ample of enlightenhent and bene: ficence, not unworthy of consideration and imitation "We have no intention of support ing a second university," is the premier of Ontatio, a province with an atea of 220,000 square miles, Did be ever hear of a little kingdom cull- ed Seotland, with an area of 31,000 square miles, having four umiversitios!
