From the facts gathered, it appears that Butts, committed the fearful deed about daybreak on Sat- wrday morning, literally pounding his wife's head to an unrecopnizablg state against a stone in his own door yard. Butts who is a man of between fifty- fiverand sixty vears of age has been go resident of Cloyne for the past two years, working as a laborer around 'the villace and with the farmers in the vicinity. He is certainly insane, as be does not seem to realize he enor: mity of his crime A religious mania has §eized hold of him and he. says the Lord told him to commit the awful deed. After his arrest he was brought be- fore magistrate John A. Carscallen, Northbrook, who cémmitted him to Napanee jail. i It appears that Butts wgs laborin under a hallucination that he is a prophet and that the Lord command ed him to slay the devil and he fan- gied his wife was that persongge and he was only carrving out the com- mands of the Lord, After committing the awful deed he walked about half a mile to Constable Cuddy's house and said to him: "Come and gee the devil I have slain." And when the consta- ble went with him to his home the ter- rible sight that wet his view was the almost unrecognizable form of his wife ving in the vard with her head com pletely pounded off, and cold in death. Butts tells how he committed the decd, says he struck her in house and then carried her out to # yard, and with a large stone beat her head TERRIBLE MURDER Committed At Cloyne on Saturday-Gideon Butts Beat Out His Wife's Brains. ~ Murderer Is a Sufferer From Re- : ligious Mania--Claims He Is a Prophet. against another large flat: stone. From the appearance of the utan the murd- ered woman must have! made some' re- sistance, as he has several scratches on his face' and" his legs are black and bruised as if from assault. He covered the remains with 'a sheet before going to constable Cuddy's' house. The day before, (Friday), about five o'clock in the' morning, he went to Constable Cuddv's house in his bare feet und only partially attired and act: ed so strange and erratic that the con- stable convulted with some others, locked up, hut his wife begged not te du 50 as7he 'was quite: harm- less, and only through her interces sion was the man allowed to he at large.
