Corea To Be Field Whére Problem Of Russian Or Japanese Su- premacy Will Be Fought--Bui- garia Indignant At Greece. London, Aug. 17.--The Times' Rus sian correspondent. in Turkestan states that seditious rumors are rife in Fgrghant, concerning an agitation ' among the natives, and an alleged ap pearance of another Mahommedan re igious agitator, inciting the popule tion to insurrection. At Namangau, the Russian residents, are arming themselves, and men are even afraid to go fishing, éxcept in large parties fully armed. ' The Times' Berlin special says : The constitution of a Rusian viceroyalty in the far east, leads the German press to harp on the favorite Theme of antagonism between Britain and Rus sia, throughout Asia which recalls the struggle between the bear and the whale. The Times' correspohdent, cabling from Seoul, describes the situation in Corea, which is destined to be = the field where the great problem of the tussian or Japanese supremacy in the far east will be solved. Corea is very anxious, fearing her independence is sravely menaced, whatever may be the issue. 'The estension of Russian activi- ty in Manchuria to Corea, the corres pondent declares, is most ominous. Russia is acting. under the asrvemen of 1896, giving her a secure foothold on the Corean side of the Yalan and Tumen rivers, the two great water: wavs separating Manchuria from Co rea. But the activity is not confined ta the frontier. The Russians who contemplate building a stragetic pail way from Liauyang to the Yalu river, foresee that in time thev will Be able to extend it through Wiju. The Times' Sofia special save: ' A very bad impression has heen produc ed by the circular of the Greek gov: renment inviting the Greek consuls in Macedonia to recdmmend the Greek | population, not only to abstain from icipation in insurrection, but to eh the Turkish: authorities to secure on rapid supression of it, by denovne- ing refugee Bulgarian insurgents. The Buigerian papers are indignant at this procesding, showing that the Greek eovernment forgets that many Bal. garigns fought for Greek independence. + ENGLAND WARNS RULER, Foreign Subjects Must Be Pro- tected.
