The fire- men reached the scene on good time, but found the fire rather difficult to handle. A 'stream was soon at work from the corner of Queen and Ontario streets, and soon afterwards the Chatham engine was sending forth 'two streams, pumping from Anglin's Ba . « y. The long stretch of wooden building was a mass of flames, and there was no ol of saving any of it. The firemen directed their attention chiefly to Mr. 's residence and boat houses. Most' of the latter were sav- ed, but the forgier was badly burned on the north side, and everything in ei by smoke and water. For a short while the conflagration was very great, and hundreds of peo- le were wn to it fromm all over the city. There were enough there to form two large church congregations. In an hour of) a half nothing re- mained of the wooden structures. Boats lying in the vicinity were tow- ed away from the. fire range. The tug Active was kept from burning only by careful attention. A strong south wind would have put the Rath- bun lumber yard in danger, but for- tunately the breeze was light. The barracks' stables were also in dan- ger, but were carefully watched. A row of Knapp's boat houses were burned, but 'nearly all the boats in- vide were saved. A sailboat and a gasoline launch, however, were de- stroyed. Several times the spile wharf carght fire, but the blaze was ex- inguished, firemen were handicapped hy there being no hydrant nearer than over three blocks' distance. The hose of the cart from No. 1 station was not sufficient to reach the burning buildings, and there was a littie delay till the chemical engine arrived and the hose from it was coupled. Then , | there was sufficient for' the time be ing, but every bit of hose had ic b> valled into play for combetion with {the Chatham engine which 'performed good work. It was a fire hard to combat, rince it covered a big area and the substance being all of wood. Material aid was rendered by many members of the R.C.F.A., who quite often give their services to the fire- men. The batterymen's efforts wer | appreciated by the brigade and the onlookers. The gasoline yacht destroyed was Llown up. When the fire -feached the boat house in which it was, there was an explosion; snd bosk "house and contents rose in the air. 4 The fire broke out again about five o'clock this morning. : The brig ade was notified and spent Do-: | three hours more at the place: The blaze was around the boiler in the saw mill where it is supposed it first originated. The Chatham engine was taken down the second time. J A Rutile, general 'manager of the Montreal Transportation company, is in the city to make arrangements for rebuilding the company's property. The M. T. company carried $1,000 insurance on its burned plant, which was the most complete for ship repair purposes that exists between Chicago and Montreal. Mr. Knapp was absent from home when the fire broke out, and got back in time to see the place in flames, The land on which the M. T. com: rany s buildings stood is, owned hy the K. & P. railroad company. The build- ings were owned by the M. T. com- pany. FARMERS LOSING MONEY, Because Cheese Factories Do Not Register Cheese, "If the cheese salesmen of Frontenas district knew what was good for them they would ister the make of their factories at the cheese board week," said a leading buye ? discussing cheese matters. "Tt is com. petition that = sets the price; remove competition, and there is not any in- centive to advance the price. Tor i stance, there are factories in this ¢ trict that) never board their che 3 arrangement it is sold to buy at board prices. Now, buyers are shrewd Hough to keep down the price so as to tain these cheese atia low rate; some buyers' seldom buy a pound of cheese on the board, having arranged for all they want in the way I have mentioned. Other "buyers who might buy tits eheese if boarded never get a chance to bid for it, hence there is not any competition, and the ruling price in Kingston is low. Look at what a little competition did last week, ran the price away up, so that Kingston board led the whole Dominion in the price. Instead of havifig only from 1,200 to 1,400 boxes registered = here each week, there should be from 2.000 to 2,500. Then you would see some competition and good prices) It is a short-sighted policy on the part of salesmen to withhold their cheese from the board; the patrons are losing money as a vesult, but I need not care, as I buy a lot of this wnregister ed cheese at prices which allow me enough profit to buy the cigars, so come along and have a smoke." Wedded At Noon To-Day. The marriage took place at St. Paul's church at noon to-day of Charles Butlin, the popular driver for the Canadian Express : company, and Miss Jennie Newman, daughter of Mrs, Mary A. Newman, 161 Brock street. Archdeacon Carey performed the cere- mony. The charming bride was attir- ed in a travelling suit of brown cloth, and was attended by her sister, Miss Fannie Newman, The groom was sup- ported: by George S. Thompson, of Montreal. After the ceremony a wed- ding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's mother. At two o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Butlin left by the Cape Vincent steamer for a tour through Northern New York. Horses Took Fright. A team of R. Wilson's livery horses, attached to a cab, took fright while standing 'in front of Congress Hall on Sunday morning, and dashed off. They galloped out King street east, leaped over the G.T.R. track in their wild career, and finally rushed into Anglin's lumber yard where they were caught.' No one was in the cab, and no damage resulted. Of For A Holiday. After the arduous exertions on the baseball diamond at Cape Vincent last week, a number of members of the Pony baseball team considered that. they needed a rest at. some quiet watering place. This morning Randolph, Eliott, Hickey, Young and Paly left for Jones' Falls to spend ten days in retreat. Taken Back For Trial. Emile . Next month, the probability ix that| Soap ted on a sunay | YOUr blankets or spot on the General Hospital grounds a shack wil be erec Sunlight will fot thé treatment of persons in the fleer.y. first stages of consumption. Dr. Thir is chiefly interested in the scheme in' the erection of such a structure when he was medical superin- tendent of the General Hospital. 'The management cominittee of the hospital of the scheme, 'and all that now remains to get is the con- overnors, and that is al- dact he: has approved sent. of the most assured. The small sum of money required to erect the shack will be pri- vately "subscribed, but it is desirable that the hospital should take in - the patients as if they belonged to ome of the public wards, only that they would be treated separately. The shack, as similar to those in connection the Gravenhurst' sanitarium, be twenty-four feet square, one storey high, kh , board and the other' three of canvas. Four patients will be accommodated. As stated hefore, only incipient cases will be taken, and only these within the city of Kingston, sé that the ob- jection cannot be raised that tuber culous " patients are being brought here. Cases will be taken right from the streets of the city, which are in the first stages of the disease, and by careful feeding and fresh air, an on- deavor will be made to save them from decline. That is how the spread of con sumption may be arrested and finally stamped out altogether. If the experi ment proves a success the system. may be extended. THERE ARE THREE. Old Crimean Veterans Residing Within The City. In Saturday's issue of the Whig was went to the effect that John lly was thought to be the only liv ing representative in Kingston of the Criviean war. Six days later the first of the four great battles, Alma, was fought. Mr, Fitzgivens was drafted in to the - famous regiment of British Guardsmen, composed of the largest men in the British service at the time. He was a comrade of the late Sergt. James Wootton, and went through the campaign with him, John Howard, who makes his home in the Hotel Dieu, also passed through the campaign from beginning to end, as his credentials show.
