Unfortunately, however, he seems to entertain no desire to re-enter the matrimonial state, while the large for tune loft by the late duke makes for tune-hunting by his heir unnecessary. He has never shared his father's taste for politics, but in one respect turf---they vied with se another, The old Duke's place at Goodwood is known by reputation at least to all American Jovers of horse racing. For a number of years the new duke then Lord March, held the office of putation was such that instead of de- riving prestige from the office, it was his tenure thereof that was considered to give weight to the decisions of the tribunal in connection with all racing matters in England, indeed, when, some years ago, he fig ured as a moving spirit in a jockey club inquiry which resulted in a num er of leading jockeys and proiessiona rs being warned off the turf, not protest was heard, even on the part "of their friends against the decision, so final was re garded the verdict of Lord March. Monireal Herald. Kingston, Ont., claims the distinge tion of having within its corporate limits what js without doubt the most extraordinary prison in Nowth Ameri: ca, as well as being the most famous penal colony in the British possessions on this side of the Atlantic. The huge pileof stone and steel shelters erimi nals from all parts of Canada. The worst cases, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, condemned to long terms of corvitude are sent there, and there are to-day donfined thers 450 men and fif- wen women of that type. Visitors ave not 'admitted, which is- another rule not enforced in other prisons in this country. There are many American criminals in cells there, several of them famous for desperate deeds in half a doren countries. One historic felon, around whom a considerable romance has been woven, is a prisoner there, Tt is vommonly said if his trie name were known one of the first families in the itv of New York----that of a famous politician--would hlush. He is entered as Charles Quackenbush, and must serve a life term The parole sv wep was established a vear ago, and 300 hundred convicts are ont under its provisions. The oft cials of the prison are dissatisfied with the workings of the plan. They sav it is a political lever that is entirely too powerful. Prisoners released are fre- quently sent back 'for new eritnen. Un like the plan as worked in the United States, the paroled convicts do not report diveetly - back te the warden, but to the loeal police authorities of the community in which they may be stopping There are twelve acres in the hig prison, and a stone wall twenty feet high surrounds the grounds. It was constructed in 1811, and at several angles beyond the walls are construct ed stone towers of defence as against an invading foe. The prison. walls along the lake are espe ially strong and five feet thick. It was intended to withstand the assault of heavy guns from the sca and presents to-day a most formidable front. This is not an industrial prison, the men merely manmidacturing things for their own congunption, with the ex eption of binder twine and clothing for the North-West police. Their own clothes are made jn prison, and the stripes of blue and brown run length wise of the body instead of around, an in the United Btates The school is compulsory, ak in re ligioue attendance, and, except in the ease of old convicts, men come eut of this institution after a few years well educated. Two hours a dav are devot ed to school training, and each Sun dav the criminals must atgend chapel in the penitentiary. There ix a Catholic chapel as well as a Protestant church, though the maj ority of the inmates are Protestants. The prison choir and the convict or ganizt are well trained.
