In « Such is, in some respects, an ori- ginal treatment of the subject, and by one who hag studied the situation on the ground. The British journalists who recently toured through Canada have been 'missionaries in a political as well as personal sense, and if others take the Sheffield Independent's view of it the educational campaign of Mr, Chamberlain they may be very largely neutralized. EDITORIAL NOTES, The Ottawa Journal wants Sir Wil. frid Laurier to "speak now" on the prefercatiol tariff question. A blast from Canada would help Chamber lain, -- Mr. Chamberlain resents the idea that he is not acting and speaking for the masses. His strenuous life, he alleges, is the best refutation of that slander. The conservative members "af the se- nate, it is announced, will fight the Grand Trunk Pacific bill to the bitter end. As a politic: al leader he is certainly without a peer in Canada. Mr. Chamberlain refers to his op- in fponents, the protectionists, Doss he include Sir Charles Tupper ? After having left Mr. Tuesday night, down in his Ferguson's the ruffian started towards the city, and at the at- tempted to hold up the gate keeper, Ww. Waller, an old man about seventy vears of age. Suddenly confronting the aged gate keeper, he pushed a re- volver in his face and demanded that Waller throw up his hands. Tn reply Mr. Waller picked up a tin pail and hurled it at the head of the intruder, who fired point blank #4 Mr. Waller, but fortunately the bullet went wide. Agein the man demanded that Mr. Waller throw up his hands, and a se- cond time the demand was refused. At this stage, Mrs. Waller appeared and cond shot at Mr. Waller and then ran out the front door, heading to- wards the city. It in presumed that the desperado is an ex-convict, and Mr. ferguson went out to the Kingston penitentiary to ascertain if a convict answering the descrintion of the man seen around the place had been recently liberated. The police were furnished with a de- tail of the 'man's appearance, and arked to keep a sharp look-out for him. -------------- MONEY AWAITS BOOTH. -- But Postal Inspectors In Mont- real Cannot Find Him. Halifax, Oct. 7.--The steamer Pro- patria, which has arrived at Sydney, brings news that owing to the total failure of the fisheries, many families are seriously contemplating leaving the island of St. Pierre for Canada, or the United States. Several already have reached here, and, within the past three weeks over thirty families have left the island. It is feared that much destitution will prevail during the coming winter among the poorer classes, as the result of the failure of fishing. x -------- A Reduction Offered.
