The thousand ton schooner Stuart H, Dubn lies at the foot of Church street after an experience unique in the carrying trade of the great lakes. : Dunn is owned in Toronto and is the largest sailing vessel on Lake On- tario. Her last trip was to Hamilton with coal, and after she was unloaded she was entirely without a crew. All bands forward fon left her, and there only remained the captain, the mate, the captain's wife and the stewardess. Capt. William R. Wakely was nothing daunted by his inability to find sail- ors. With his mate, Jacob A. Acker man, he made sail on the vessel Sun- day morning and started out from Hamilton without the assistance of a tug. It was a tiny ship's company to handle a vessel which in the - old days carried eight men in the fore castle and a captain and two mates alt. Since the introduction of the donkey -engine for hoisting and heav- ing the Dunn has carried a crew of seven hands all told, but Capt. Wake ly steered boldly. out through the piers and down the lake under all sail, al though he had more masts than men. It bl fresh occasionally, but hé was able to carry all his canvas' and en- tered Toronto harbor early in the ef ternoon, rounding up neatly and making the dock again without any assistance from a tug. Capt. Wakely, who performed this remarkable feat of seamanship, is one of the best known lake masters. He lives at 133 Spruce street, This --eity. 1 -------- WILL CONSIDER IT, A New Scheme For School Work. Last evening the teachers and offi. cers of the four Methodist Sunday schools of the city met in the lecture room of the Brock street church to discuss the advisability of adopting a course of lessons on a new plan which Rev. Mr, Crummy outlined. He point- od out the Tmportance of following the development of the child mind, of adopting the lessons to suit it, of making the Suaday school class work meet the uirements of the pupils in respect of their age and mental activity. He made special reference to the thoughts advanced in this re. spect by Dr. Marianna Broune, in a book which she published and which embraced her thesis for the degree of Ph.D, in Columbia University. The subject was discussed by repre- sentative Sunday school workers, in- cluding Rev. W. T. G, Brown, Alder man Meek, Rev. Thomas Brown, and others, and eventually the question was referred to a committee which was made up of the pastors of the several churches, the superintendents of schools, and superintendents of primary departments. By request of the Whig, Miss Lois Spunders, the university librarian, cqntributes - the! following : 'he painting just executed by G. A. Reid, R.C.A., of Toronto, for the new arts' building, is now put in place in the consulting library, where it oc- cupies the space above the wide hearth with its dark wainscotting, enriched by Prof. Shortt's beautiful wood-earv- mg. ~The choice of ga color scheme was limited by the vivid red tinting of the room, but the to this have been successfully sur- mounted, and the dull gold and som- | bre blue tones prevailing in the paint- ing harmonize finely with their sur- roundings. The compositior a- befits a mural decoration, is large and sim- ple in design, and free from all un. necessary detail. The work consists of three sections, a central lunette and two side panels. These latter are oc- cupied by the seated figures of Thought and Inspiration, which, though nohle and suggestive, are subordinate in in: terest to the central subject, where an ancient bard is singing to his harp before a group of eager listeners. The effect of distance in this division with its blue sea and mountains is particul- arly fine. To many of us the work of Mr. Reid is already well-known in the fine decorations now in Toronto in the city hall, and in many private houses, but many of those most familiar with his paintings think that we have here one of his finest efforts, and the uni- persity is to be congratulated in pos. sessing so happy an example of one of Canadian artists, The our most note good fortune of Queen's in this par- ticular, is mainly due to the energy of Mr. Symons, the architect of the new buildings, and also to a large extent to the generosity of Mr, Reid himseli. ------------ ves His Life To a Neighbor's » Kindness. a Daugherty, well kn thro rout Mercer and Summer a tes, W.
