Peterboro, Nov. 2.--+A gluing at- was perpetrated a few miles from Peterboro on Wednesday. A man re presenting himsel. to be brother of the Hon. GG. A. Cox called upon the farmer, wishing to purchase his farm. While "Cox" was being shown about the farm by its owner, the two were met by a man who stated that he was hunting for his lost sister. He had three rolls of bills containing 85,. 000, $3,000 and $1,000 respectivelv. He produced four cards and offered "Cox" and the farmer $10 each if they could pick out a certain card in the bunch. This was done, and the sharper offer ed each $1,000 if they would repeat the act, whith they did, "Cox" hav ing apparently, unseen by the stran- ger, marked the card which was to be drawn. The stranger then enquired whether the farmer had money to pay should he lose in his guess. The latter had money in the nk in town. "Cox" tried to persuade Lim, to come to town, and draw his money from the bank, stating that with this to back them they could "do" the' strange: out of a big sum. But the farmer, who is an inteligent and = well-to-do man, refused to be caught. "Cox™ said he would return the following day to arrange about purchasing the farm, but neither he. nor the other stranger has been seen since. A similar case was successfully worked in Otonabee a few years ago, when a farmer lost over 83,000 after being persuaded to. draw upon his bank account. Election Day In London. London, Nov. 2.--It is something of a coind lence that elections are being held almost simultaneously in London and New York, the two greatest cities of the English speaking world, and it is especially noteworthy that in Lon don, as in New York, there is an detive non-partizan movement, inde pendent of the great national parties, and looking only to the improvement of the affairs of the people. " The election *in London for 'the choice of a city government is being held, to-day. The chief issue is the promotion of the schools and action by the city government for improving the condition of the working classes, the former measure being made the more prominent. The division is between the moder ates and the progressives, the former at present having a majority of the total membership of the borough coun cils, but the latter have been the more active in the present canvass and hope to reduce the preponderance of the moderates, if they do not secure control.
