AIDING THE TORY PARTY. ° There had been an enormous ex penditure of money in campaign liter ature by the eonservative party, and with the result that the post office ac- commodation for the time being has given out. It was supposed that Mr, Graham, of the Montreal Star, had contributed the literature in his soul for the success of the conservative party, but that idem has been dinsi pated. E. W. Thomson, for a long time connected with the Toronto Globe, but now an author writes to the Boston Transcript that the C. P. R. company has 'been the special fiend of the tory party in its presont emer. gency. The C.P.R. company hobbied against the Grand Trunk Paciie boheme, and 'failing to defeat the leg- Islation of the government is said to | have supplied the funds which have been used in part in deluging the Mr. Thomson points out another tion advocated the purchase of the Sudbury-Fort William branch of the CPR. for $25,000,000 or $30,000,000, and it is a barren and unprofitable investment. The opposition has also contemplated the purchase of the North Shore line from the C. P. R. company for another $30,000,000. The conclusion is that the C. PI. R. is most anxious to see a change of government because this may mean a great advantage to it. The C. P. R. company bas been identified with the conservative party in past elections and it understands its place and func tions very clearly. Of course there is no distinot evidence of what Mr. Thomson indinuates, because' it is one of the things that cannot be proven. ---- Some of the English papers are lacking an intelligent appreciation of Canada and its people. The Ontario Churchman, issued in excellent form hy the Deseronto News company, recently announced its in- tention of early discontinuance. This was sincerely regretted hy the bishop and many of the clergy, and they have asked the British Whig to revive the useful publication, under pledges of ter support. An energetic effort has, therefore, been undertaken and two gumbery, one for Advent and one for Christmas, will be issued to com: the present year. Infants' Home Richer Hundred Dollars. One hundred and two dollays in the bank and a few smaller sums to come in is the splendid result of the tea and sale in aid of the Infants' Home, which. was held at Mrs. Walkem's, "Queens ote." on Vednesday. The ob- ject was the securing of funds to build ar isolation ward for sick children, and .the badge worn by all the ladies assisting at the affair, consisting as it did of a tiny baby doll, dressed in white and bearing a red cross on its breast, spoke very eloquently of that objeet.. In charge of the door were the treasurer, Mrs. McCammon, and Mrs. Gowdey, and after paying their en- trance fee, the visitors went on to re ceive Mrs. Walkem's bright welcome, and then, as the finances' show, pa- tronized liberally the work-table and sweets. At the former, which was in the drawing-room, Mrs. Phelan and Mrs. Routley took in twenty-nine dol lars or so in exchange for very pretty fancy work. In the hall Mrs. Clements, Mrs. McGowan, Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Carson sold sweets, with Miss Leta Carson assisting them, and realized more than thirty dollars. Coffee and tea were dispensed in the dining-room by Mrs. Macnee and Mrs. T. C. Wh son, Miss Lena Wilson and a number of bright little girls, Miss Norah Mue- nee, iss Eleanor Phelan and Miss Margery Brownfield taking very good care 'that everyone had refreshments.
