Widow of Vietim Sues to Recbver $25,000. Albany, Nov. 13.--~The appeal of the widow of a man killed by an explo- sion inside of a beer barrel was argu- ed in court of appeals--that of Eva Dikescheid, administratrix of the es- tate of George Dickescheid, against John F. Betts of New York. Dickescheid was varnishing the in- large beer barrel, and his lantern exploded the fumes of the var- nish. The defendant contends, and the lower courts have held, that the dan- gerous character of the job must have been known by an intelligent work- The plaintiff seeks to prove that her husband was only a laborer, and that his employer was responsible by neg- ligence. Sherbrooke, Que., Nov. 13.--~Miss Mabel Coombs, Rock Forest, was pro- bably fatally injured in a collision between a street car and a waggon on the belt line. Young Man Accused Of Theft Of $89. Acting upon a warrant swom to by Delos Grimshaw, the police, Thurs- day evening, placed under arrest P. Gillespie, who recently conducted a flour and feed store at the junction of Montreal and Princess street. The charge preferred was the alleged theft $89 from complainant, the money, it is 'alleged having from D. Pound, baker. Grimshaw. and Gillespie were part- ners in business, and a failure re- sulted. It is said that Gillespie owed Grimshaw $500 and Grimshaw wanted Gillespie to" give a'note, endorsed by Gillespie's father for the 'amount. The youngér 'Gillespie was agreeable to signing the note, but objected to the demand that his father be made a joint signer. At the police court Friday morning. the prisoner pleaded not guilty and was remanded for one 'week. Lady - Roberts, this morning, said, the condition of Lord' Roberts, was quite satisfactory, that there were no complications and that he was mak- ing favorable progress towards re- covery. Thomas XNilligan and George Mur- phy, Windsor, Ont., were sentenced to three years in Kingston penitentiary for highway robbery, having been found ilty of attacking an old man named hon Albert Copeland, of North Oxford was struck by a train while driving over a crossing at Ingersoll. He was severely injured, but may. recover. The horse was. hurled a considerable dis tance, but was unhurt. : Orrin' Hickok is dead at Cleveland. His mind began failing a year ago and he had since been in the asylum. Mr. Hickok was one of the greatest of trotting drivers, and was known as the "Tallyrand of the Turf." Sir Wilirid Laurier is to be advised of the trouble between Supt. Dube, of the I.C.R.,, and Agent Brassard, of River Du Loup, the latter having been suspended by the superintendent re- cently. As both parties have a se parate political backing, - the résult will be watched w th interest. A. S. Green, photographer, Berlin, is resisting a claim for $3,000 on un- paid stock in the Atlas Loan com- pany. Green contends he had not heen notified of the change of the company from an Ontario to a Dominion char- ter. Mr. Wallace, late manager, pro- duced a power of attorney from Green to act for him. Inland Chinese Missions. A large number of people went out to "Calderwood," on Thursday, to hear an address by Mrs. Stott, of the Chinese Inland Mission. This interest- ing woman spoke first of the apathy over missionery work at home, mani- fested by the majority of people, and then gave a most interesting account of her own special work--the training of young Chinese girls to mgke good wives for Christian husbands. The workers in China have been much en- couraged lately, as during the recent persecutions but two out of two hun- dred gave up the faith. Another hope- ful thing was the fact that but six weeks elapsed after the burning of their mission buildings, before the work of rebuilding was begun. Sev- eral converts are made every month, and a converted Chinaman, is usual- ly a thoroughly converted man.
