A woman who has the sympathy of most members of her sex is the Grand Duchess of Hesse, She is the second biter of the royal pair, who are in and best known as the late Duke of Edinburgh and the present Duchess of Edinburgh. Tall, handsome, high-spirited, idolized by her father and mother, she lod an exceptionally happy girl's life. At seventeen A mar. ringe wax arranged for her with her cousin, the reigning Grand Duke of Hesse, only - son of Prince Alice of England. While Queen Victoria cop- sented, the king--then Prince of Wales =~objected, on the score of cousinship, but his objection was over-ruled. een. Victoria was at Cherbourg for the ceremony, as wore the German emy- Peror and empress and other illustri- Ous personages. For a time things went smoothly, and a little daughter was born. Then the variance of the natures of husband and wife had ity outtome. The Grand Duchess, a fine horsewoman and whip, was never so happy as when in the saddle or driv. ing a team. The Grand Duke was ae customed to remain in bed, executing fine designs in fancy work, alter nating this form of amusement by getting up and playing practical Jokes, "Of these he made his wife the victim, turning her into ridicule be fore the court, The high spirited grand duchess left him and wont home. Queen Victoria patched the matter up between her wrand-children, and again the Grand Duchess lived at her court. wever, things could not wo on and the marciage was anmillid inst after the death of the late queen, The Ger. man emperor sided with the grand duke, and subsequently deprived the grand duchess of her coloneley in a crack. cavalry regiment. Bohemian pitchblende was "| investigated and by wash carried out what, had hitherto been considered the clement, uranium contains a small amount of impurity and that this im- purity far surpasses pure uranium in radioactivity. From many tons of ur- anium ore a few grains of this im- purity was separated and the world ¢ acquainted with radium salts, Roentgen rays are given off by ra- dinm, These rays consist of disturh- ances, in the ether, that all-pervading medium by which light is transmitted whether from an adjacent candle or from the most distant star or nebula. In these disturbances of the ether no material is carried from one place to another, just as waves started by a wind far wp the lake mav be propa: gated to Kingston, though the water itself may not be brought here from the distant point. But radium gives off other rays in addition. These rays are part of its material. It gives off two kinds of rays, rays that are very soon stopped by the air and can only proceed. a short distance and rays that are more pendtrating. The first rays are usually called alpha rays apd the second beta. The alpha rays consist of comparatively large parti- cles of the size of atoms. The beta rays consist of much smaller particles of 'about one thousandth the weight of the hydrogen atom. The heavy par- ticles of which the alpha radiations consist more with a velocity of about 20,000 miles a second, when they start out from the radium, but as a bullet is very much retarded when shot into water so these particles are much re. tarded by material substances and are stopped by less than an inch thick- ness of air. But these particles strik- ing on the ordinary fluorescent screen produce a very wonderful effect. They make it luminous for the moment and the beholder sees an extraordinary display of fireworks: A number. of people in Kingston had the pleasure of looking at Prof. Cox's ""'Spinthar iscope." This consists first of all of a very tiny watch hand dipped in a a weak solution of a radium com- pound. Probably there is not more than a thousandth of a grain of radium salt upon the watch hand. Just below the hand there is a very small screen made of paper, covered with zine sul phide which glows brilliantly wher- ever it is struck by the particles from the radium. One almost seems to see the particles streaming off from the radium for the scintillation appear so rapidly in so many places as to give the sensation of streams of light. When one considers, however, that the particles are moving with im mense rapidity it is evident that they cannot be seen in their flight as one sannot see a bullet shot from a rifle. Moreover the particles are so small as not to be visible by the most pow erful microscope and though from a small piece of radiom they go off at the rate of thousands in a second, the amount lost in a thousand yéars could not be weighed on the most sen sitive balance, It would make this article 100 long to describe how the velocity of the particles is arrived at and to tell of other peculiarities of these radiations. ill.
