BEITINC MEN DISLIKE SNAP- BACK SYSTEM. ------ The Limestone-Toronto II. Match To-Morrow--A Capture For Queen's Track Club--General Sporting Notes. WEile the eastern clubs oppose the snap-back system of rugby because they think it inferior to the saim- mage game, betting men oppose it for a much different reason. They de clare that it is not as safe a game to bet upon as the old system, and when betters are spoken of, one means those who make a scientific study of teams and rarely lose a wager. It is claimed by them that under the snap-back system it is almost im possible to name the winner by the usual methods employed, when the teams are nearly of the same strength. There must be a big differ ence in the playing ability before the winner could be s "called." That view seems to be correct, judging from the O.R.F.U. junior series in the west. No doubt this will be good news, for those who are trying to put down the gambling practice. But it is a fact that the eastern professional betting class will never look with fa vor upon the new Ontario rules, and will use their influence against them, which means that Ottawa and Mon treal are likely to remain loyal sup porters of the strenuous scrimmage = The Limestone Match. The match to-morrow afternoon on the cricket field between Limestones and Toronto 11 should prove very in- teresting, and it is to be hoped that the weather will be of such a nature as to allow it to be viewed by a large gathering of gridiron devotees. It is recognized that the winners of this contest will virtually be the O R.F.U. junior champions, and hence both teams will exert themselves to the utmost. Toronto has evidently a smart lot of players to. have come this far through the western fray to wards the championship. Limestones are speedy and strong, and should make a splendid showing. As no gate fee can be secured at the. ericket field, the public should be prepared to show their appreciation of the Limestones by a liberal display of coin when the hat is passed round. Football. It's hockey that should be in son now, instead of rughy : The annual meeting of the Ontario Union will, be held on Saturday, De cember 12th. Columbia will play on the during the Christmas holidays, Michigan will likely go west also. There were five inches of snow yes terday on the Ottawa gridiron and the thermometer was below the zero mark. : An indoor baseball tournament is to be held in Madison Square Garden, New York, for the week of December 13th to 19th. sea- coast and Next year the O.R.F.U. will have to get its junior matches played off earlier. It's almost crimmal to ask avers to get out on the gridifon in this kind of weather. The Limestones will he in need of money to go to Toronto for the final match if they defeat onto II here to-morrow. "The people should help a team that represents their city with honor. Ottawa Rough Riders are not to blame for refusing to play a match for the Canadian championshiv. To- ronto 'Varsity, had ample warning, and agreed to the Ottawas' terms too late. But Hogtown will be Hogtown! Hockey. Toronto Wellingtons will probably challenge for the Stanley cup. A bank league will probably be form ed in the Ingersoll-London district. "Rube" Waaddelli the eccentric pitch er, has severed his connection with "The St of Guilt" theatrical com- pany, after a row with the manager. He will dispense drinks for Sammy Nicolls, the old Western Association player, who runs a Wheeling, Va., sa loon. The gates seem pretty effectively lccked against Frank Bonner, the former Wilkesharre baseball player, at every league ground in the National Association. The Toronto management has placed his name on the reserve list sent to Secretary Farrell, and, ac cording to present indications, it will not be an easy matter to get it off.
