A ---------- TARTE AS A NATHAN. The Montreal Gazette presents Mr. | Tarte as an' Nathan who was rejected by the government when he called the premier's attention to a fiscal wrong. He was mot a Nathan, however, when he, some years previously, laid before Sir John Macdonald the ini- quity of the conservative party, the rascalities committed in connection with the public works' 'department, and demanded that it be cleansed ! The wonder grows that a man who was treated as badly os Mr. Tarte was then, who was turned down and in self-defence compelled to proceed in parliament against the corruptors, should ever want to be associated with the party again. We do not read that Nathan was repulsed and compelled to make 'com- mon cause with the enemy in order to have justice triumph! When Na- than said, "Thou art the man," there was an immediate surrender, a con- fescion of wrong doing, and a cry for mercy. All this is contrary to the exparience of Mr. Tarte when he be- gan his purification of the politicial parties, The men he accused of wrong-doing cast him out, and though they suffer- ed for. their sins in later years they never confessed and never offered cither apology or atonement. Mr. Tarte may have posed as a Nathan then, but he did not have a Nathan's honor, STRIKE AND ITS EFFECTS. The street railway strike in Chicago has been ended, and edch side claims a victory. As a matter of fact the strikers lose on all points but one-- that they will be taken back, ex- cepting those who have been arrested or convicted of violence, Thousands of men went out. of service in sympa- thy with the aims and struggles of the car men, and these may recover their places, though the railway com: panies will do what they can, and will probably succeed, in retaining the non-union men who served them in their extremity. It has been said that the street car operators did not really demand an increase of wages, but they did. An increase of wages was not all for which they contended. They wanted a fuller recognition of the union, want- ed it to have something to say about who should be employed and who dis- missed by the company, and wanted the union to be consulted about: the routing of the cars. The company re- sisted all these demands, on the ground that they meant an interfer- ence with the management of their business, and at the same time in- sisted that the wages question should be referred to arbitration. It is possible, as a result, that the men may suffer a decrease of wages, and for the reason that they are paid higher rates in Chicago than the car men of the neighboring towns and cities, The men refused to refer this matter to arbitration for a week, and then consented. The International Union of car men, in this way, suf- fored another defeat. It has the un- fortunate record of failing in every strike which it has engineered this year. ---- REVELATION IN RELIGION: 7 The New York Times has been inter- esting sitsell in th: Sunday question. It selected a. day when the weather was fine, when there was no reason on ots account for a poor church at- tendance, and then took a census. It had the churches lying between Man: hattan and the Central Park visited and thé congregations counted. There were cighty-seven Protestant and nine teen Catholic churches with a total attendance of 100,96F This represent ed one in four hundred of the popula- tion. The percentage of church-goers among the Catholics was higher than among the Protestants, namely 61 to 39, and the Protestants outnumber the Catholics in the district two to one. The revelation has had its disturbing effects. The question is whether the relations of the sects and the churches age the same in the larger New York and whether the showing is indicative of the condition of the churches gener ally in other cities. . One thing is seli-evident--that the Catholics are the more faithful to church duties and church obligations. The weather does not affect them ma- terially and does not keep them away from the services of the sanctuary, Through rain or sunshine, at early hours or at late hours, they seem to be eager to pay their vows, and 'their example in this respect is worthy of all praise, Why the, Protestants should not be equally zealous no one can say, but as a matter of fact they are not. ; The indifference of the Protestants IG. -- 5 membered that ture, education and care of the young. --e------ WORK OF THE PURISTS. Is there a Conservative Association in Ontario? There is a doubt about it. A Globe reporter, after some in- vestigation, was really uncertain as to whether the association was active, morbound or in a hypnotic state, Some persons who were seen, thought it only awaited the occasion in order to spring into life, and some thought that, having served its purposes, it had ceased to be, | Mr. Brock, M.P.--that dear old man, who is so candid betimes--said the On- tario Conservative Association was designed to put down corruption in political contests, To this end it rais- ed"a fund with which to help candi- dates financially, in certain constitu- encies--conservative candidates of course--to have detectives and re port the wrong doing, to prosecute the guilty ones whether they were lib- erals or conservatives. Mr. Ryckman was the treasurer, and he handled about $40,000. Some of the money went to the conservatives for legitimate expenses and he had cases in which a portion of this money was returned io him and by him to the subscribers. The association had forty-five detectives, Pinkertons, and all very smart men it is presumed. Yet these scattered odd constituencies were not able to see much, and it is not surprising that Mr. Whitney, on one occasion, had called upon the party to organize into clubs and committees for pugilis tie service at the polls. One case is over eighty cited--and only one-- wherein a balance of the money ad- vanced to a candidate was returned by him. The others either put the cash in circulation during the election or appropriated it after the manner of those who made confession of their acts in the election trials. Altogether the Ontario Conservative Association seems to have been a won- derful institution, and the inner life of it is well worth preservi in the written documents that i the re- cesses of 'certain Toronto legal offices. -- EDITORIAL NOTES.
