The world's production of gold pro- mises to reach a new high record during 1904. In 1899 the world's pro- duction of gold amounted to $306,- 724,000, which is the largest in his- tory. As a result of the Boer war, which put a stop to the production of gold in the Transvaal, the world's output in 1900 decreased over $50, 000,000, The world's production of gold in 1900 was 8254,576,000; in 1901 the output was $263,374,000, and in 1902 the output was 8205 859,000, The increase of $32,000,000 in the world's production of gold in 1902 was largely due to the opening of the African mines, These miners produced $30,000,000 more gold in 1902 than in 1901. During 1903 the African mines should show a sti'l further increase in production. As Alaska and Australia will also undoubtedly show a con- siderable increase in their gold pro- duction. It is highly probable that the world's gold production during 1904 will be the highest on record. Major '"'Jim"' Gets His Medal. Brittany Heroine With Marvelous Skill Steers Boat Past Many Dangerous Reefs to Safe Land- ing--Her Brave Deed Wins Praise. : Brest, Nov. 27. ~All Brittany is talking of the heroic exploit of Rose Here, the courageous Breton woman who saved the hives of the boatswain, Etienne Cowrsol, and thirteen men of the steamer Vesper, which was wreck- ed on the dangerous coast of Ushant. Rose Here is a fisherwoman and cul tivator of the soil. On Monday morn- ing about eight o'clock she' was gath- ering shellfish on the rocks near the Pyramide du Runiou, when out of the fog, which was just beginning to lift, she heard despairing cries, and, look- ing seaward, perceived a boat con- taining fourteen men which was drift- ing wildly at the mercy of the strong currents among a mass of dangerous reefs. Every now and again it was buffeted by the surf, which threatened to dash the frail craft to pieces. The occupants of the boat, hali- naked and afraid to throw themselves into the sea on account of the swift tide, plied their oars with the qourage of despair and shouted at the top of their voices for assistance. Rose at once signaled to them with r arms that she was coming to their aid, and the shipwrecked men, on per ceiving her meaning, pulled with all their strength for the shore. Rose ran down to the foot of the elifis, and, without losing a moment, plunged in to the boiling surf dressed as she was and swam to the boat. Climbing cn board, she reassured the sailors - as best she. could, * for she speaks little French, and then, taking her place ut the rudder, steered the boat with marvellous adroitness past a thousand dangerous reefs to Pen-ar Roch, distant about two hours by rowing from the Pyramide du Runiow. When the rescued men had landed Rose Here guided them to the village where. they met Capt. Vigl and the rest of the erew, who had all come to the conclusion that the fourteen men in the boat had been 'lost. Capt. Viel warmly thanked the herok wo. man, whom he was unfortunately un able to recompense substantially, all his money having gone down in the Vesper. He has, however, sent an account of her brave conduct to- the owners of his ship, and requested them to send her a money reward, Further, he has sent a report to the municipality of the "island. of Ushant, who, after in vestigation, will communicate it to the minister of marine. Her task finished, Rose Here return ed to her usual occupations. She states that she has saved many other ship- wrecked men under similar circum stances The British consul at Brest has sent a sum of money to M. Maigorn, the mayor of Ushant, for the brave fisher- woman, who is in very poor circum- stances. ee -- LIVED BY HER WITS. She Operated Bogus Orders And Then Shop-Lifted. London, Nov. 28.~In the dull re- cords of a week of small events Miss Lillie: Miers shines like a fiery comet. How to make $5,000 a year was the problem set hérseli by this attsaetive young looking woman and solved by er in a clever fashion, which, how- ever, had the demerit .of bringing her into the dock of the county of Lon- don sessions. Lillie was arrested on the prosaic charge of shoplifting, but her scale of operations was not that of 'an ordin ary, vulgar thief. During the current year she has annexed nineteen rings, ten watches, 142 charms, seven pins, fifty brooches, fourteen bracslets, thir teen neck chains, twenty pencil cases, twelve purses, sixteen scent bottles, nine buttonhooks, six fountain pens, and seven umbrellas. Bond street was her favorite hunt ing ground, and she inspired confidence by driving up to the shops and select- ing expensive articles to be made ac- cording to directions. While being at tended to she managed to secrote val- uable articles so cleverly that she was never detected, and, naturally, - she never calied twice at the same b or shop. ~ Lillie' Miers had' started as a drum Infants, 00 toe chief partner in which had been a Invalids, friend of her father, who had mitted suicide, For some time worked honestly, but her salary: and commissions were insuficient for her needs, and she sent.a nomber of ko gus orders. 'That added considerably to her income, and then she took to shop lifting with the suc stated. Lillie is thirty-four years of age, but Passes as twenty-six. Her cleverness is further shown by the fact that she ob com she ess © already WOMAN SWIMS THROUGH 0 mer in the employment of a city firm, 5 ¢ ¢ 6 ° 0 * 0 ® T WHAT THIS DISEASE BE OU Originating In the "y Catarrh is a constitutional disorder usually manifesting itself in or finding vent through the outside or covefing skin, or most frequently by way of the inside or lining skin which is called mucous membraxe. When catarrh affects the outside or covering skin it is called " eczema." The location of a spot or patch of ecmwma or skin catarrh may be at most anv peint covered by integument, by which name the outside skin is known. Eczeta or catarrh of the integument usually takes a descriptive name from its regional manifestation as palmar eczema if on the palm of the hand, facial eczema if on the face, etc., these names being extended to each part of the body covered by integment. This is said to be the regional name of ecsema. : Eczema also takes a descriptive name from the character of its manifestation. With eczema there is an infiltration of the skin showing the catarrhal nature of the disease, just as in a catarrh of a mucous membrane there is an infiltra- tion of its tissues. This fluid with which the eczematous skin is loaded og«s out and drying on the surface forms scabs, crusts, scales, etc Thus eczema gets another name known as its ' lesional name" from its external ap- pearance, as " squamous eczema " where it seems covered with scales, etc Then eczema takes a third descriptive name due to its intensity and duration, as; acute for a short but very severe attack; sub-acute for a milder attack, and chronic for a long drawn out or Lingering eczema Thus one little patch of eczema may have several descriptive names attached to it, the regional name, the lesional name and the name descriptive of its intensity. A patch of scaly eczema on the face might be described as ** chronic squamous facial eczema:" and any other patch at any other location might re- Ceive as many but different descriptive nalies So it is with catarrh in a mucous membrane or the inside or lining skin. If in the lining of the nose 1t is called nasal catarrh ; if in the lining of the tubes through which air is conveyed to the lungs it is called '* bronchitis; if in the lining of some of the pelvic or- gans of women it is known as °' leucor- rhea "" or more frequently as female weodkness."" Hear in mind that this is all catarrh, a systamic disease, finding vent in eith- er the outside or covering skin (integu- ment) 'or the inside or lining skin (mu- Cous membrane) and you will not get confused but readily see why one remedy can cure these seemingly separate ail~ ments The difference in the symptoms of ca- tarrh in the integument and catarrh of the mucous membrane is because of a slight difference in their structure. There is the same infiltration and {hick- ening in both cases but the glandular Remedies Applied Bxternally Oaly Dry Up or Suppress Its Externa) tions and Throw it Back on the System to Return When They Ar Discontinued or Find Vent at Some Other Point In More Impertant and Vital Parts, IS AND HOW IT pay RED.
