He said his little sister was now a big girl, and suggested that his mother stop sailing, as he was now about old o enough to earn a living for her. Saw A Vessel Disappear. Brighton, Ont., Dec. 1.--On Tuesday, November 17th, a lady living about three miles west of here on the lake shore, Mrs. Walter Sharpe, noticed a three-masted schooner apparently in distregs about ten miles south-west of the bluff. While watching it Mrs, Sharpe saw it suddenly disappear. The wind was blowing a gale at the time. Mrs. Sharpe is positive she saw the vessel and it apparently did not move. from the position where she first saw it until its disappearance. Tt is supposed to have been the missing schooner Emerald. Mr. Nix, Captain McMaster's broth- er-in-law has gone, this afternoon, to view the wreckage found near Lake- port and also to search the shore. ---- Is A Life Saver. Captain Harvey Caldwell, the heroic mate of the steamer Erin, is a life- saver of some note. He bears a hand- ented to him at Port Dalhousie for rescuing a young lady from drowning. It was early in the winter season, and a large crowd had gathered on the thin ice, A young lady, more ven- turesome than the rest, broke through disappeared. Capt. Caldwell stripped off, dived through the open- ing and brought the hali-drowned girl, whom he found ten feet from the hole, to the surface. Each suffered terribly from the effects of the experi- ence, but survived the shock. For his bravery the parents of the young lady presented Capt. Caldwell with a watch, riff and purse of gold. ---------- Trustees' Terms Expire. FS np . . Principal Sheraton, of Wycliffe Col lege, one of the most widely read of Canadian theologians, urges Chris- tians not to be apologetic in their de- fence of the Bible. "There never has been--there never can be--found in the scriptures a demonstrated error. The marvellous advances of archaeological research have completely removed many difficulties which have been held up by sceptics as positive errors. In no sphere of knowledge are difficulties submitted as valid evidence against positive proof. It does not become a Christian man to give up a principle because of difficulties we cannot ex- plain. We want more of what Paley calls moral fortitude in the power to keep a difficulty in its proper place, and refuse to allow it to disturb our confidence in ascertained principles," ---- The Blind Of Japan.
