A Mysterious Disappearance. One of the most famous of myster- ious disappearances recorded in Lon- don annals was that of a man called Howe, in 1706, and it is noted in the reminiscenices of Dr. King. Howe was a& man possessed of the comfortable in. £800 a year, and he was, to all appearances, hap- pily married. t the time he disappeared he iving with his wife in a house in Jermyn street, close to St. James', I iceadilly. One morning he told his wife he had to go to the Tower of London on business, and, stepping away from his doorstep, he was lost to the fight and knowledge, not only of his friends, but also of his wife for seventeen years, During this interval, living him dead, obtained the pas- sage of an act of parliament giving her a life interest in his estate, Howe, although it afterwards turned ' out that he was perfectly cognizant of all this at the very time when the was passed, never made any sign, and it was only after seventeen years had elapsed that he suddenly startled bis wife by coming back again into her life. The curious feature of the case was that Howe never resided during the whole of the time he was in hiding, more than a quarter of a mile away from bis own wife and house and fre quently, in disguise, followed his wife to church and other places. Why he bad left and hidden himself was never explained to his friends, and the se cret was kept to the end. ---- Perfumes. A good story is told concerning the late John Clerk, afterwards Lord Eldon, when he was pracii-ing as an advocate at the Scottish bar, says a wiiter in The People's Friend, Somie- times John had a peculiar way of ex- pressing himself, and one day when he entered the court of session he heard one. of the judges severely reprimand ing a young advocate w ho had shown some temper at the court's decision in a case he was conducting. John felt sional bro ther, and thought Ke would intervene on his hehali. 86 John said: "My lords; I hope you'll excuse me for put- ting in a word. 1 trust. vou'l. forgive my young friend for displaying a bit of temper. He is young and inex- perienced and I hope you'll overlook what he has said. 1 Teel sure if he had known your lordships as long as I have known you he would not be surprised at any decision your lord- skips would give." ' The Best Remedy For Croup. From the Atchison, Kan., Daily Globe. 'This is the season when the woman who knows the best remedies for crou is in demand in every neighborhood. One of the most terrible things in the world is tro be awakened in the mid- dle of the night by a whoop from one of the children. The croup remedies are almost as sure to be lost in case of croup as a revolver is in case of burglars. Thére used to be an old- fashioned remedy for croup, known as hive syrup, but some modern mothers say that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is better, and does not cost so much. It cavses the patient to '"throw up the phlegm" quicker, and gives rhlief in a shorter time. Give this remedy as soon as the eroupy cough appears and it will prevent the attack. It never fails and is pleasant and safe to take. For sale by all druggists, A Sunday Morag Lottery. The Rev. J. W. Diggle, rural dean of Rirmingham, says that the gamb- ling spitit is greatly on the increase in every class of society. Only the other day in Salford, a publican was fined for allowing a lottery to be car- ried on on his premises. It was sta- ted in evidence that the lottery was a Sunday morning lottery and a lot- tery. of a singular kind. There were eight three-penny picces distributed over two hundred pots of beer, and crowds rushed into the house directly the doors were opened and drank as many of these jints as they could purchase, in the hope of finding one of the three-penny pieces in. their pot. 3 Stop That Cough. It Also Is Fatal, Says a Doctor-- To Wash Is To Make a Sewer Of The Skin. Chicago, Dec. 11.--When people leave off bathing there will' be little or no- thing for the doctors to do. Pneu- wohia, colds and a hundred other ills result from the foolish habit of wash- ing the body. To bathe is to be dirty, for you thereby make a sewer of the skin. Blood, attracted by the skin, gives up products that should be left to seek a natural outlet, and soils the skin. The foregoing declarations, made by Proi. John Dill Robertson, at the an- nual meeting of the Chicago 'Belectis and Surgical Society, at the auditors ium, has aroused the interest of mem- bers. Prof. Robertson asserts that the au- of the skin would result in deat is false. He said that all physiologies which made such an assertion were wrong. The habit of taking "dry" baths was also denounced. The rub- bing of a rough towel over the skin, according to Dr. Robertson, removed the natural scales of the skin, or the "false skin." This, he said, conduded to the growth of bacteria on the skin. A .clcck made entirely of bread has been exhibited at Milan. The works are comparatively large, and for sev- eral years kept good time. The maker was a native of Milan, who devoted three years of his time to the task. He was very poor, and, being without means to purchase the necessary metal for making a clock, he set apart regu larly each day a' part of his bread, eating the crusts and saving the soft part. To solidify this he made use' of a certain kind of salt, and when = the various pieces became dry they were pericctly hard apg insoluble in water. Another strange clock exhibited some years ago in London was constructed of pins, buttons and all sorts of odds and ends by a paper named Mercer. The back and front of the clock was made of iron bed laths, while the bar- rel was part of a large brass ferrule, the ends being brass buttons hammer-' ed out. The barrel arbor had been or- iginally the blade of a shoemaker's awl, the main and several other wheels were nothing more or less than sus- pendor buttons from his own trousers, while thegcop teeth were portions of bygone knitting needles. The teeth of the centre wheels had ce. been rivets. In the dial there were one hun- dred separate pieces. '" They Sell Well." Says Druggist O'Dell, of Truro, N. S.
