A Splendid Singer--Hockey Team At Work. Newburgh, Dec, 15.--Not since the nights that the Harvard male quar- tette sang at the opening and presen- tation/of the Shibley memorial organ have the people of Newburgh and vicinity had. such a musical treat as that which they enjoyed in the Me- thodist church to-night when Ruthven McDonald, Toronto, made his first ap- pearance in Newburgh. Mr. McDonald came, heralded as Canada's great batitone, the prince of singers, and he certainly asserted his claim .to the title to-night, the large audience of over 300 people going home, feeling that they had heard one of the best singers in Canada. Mr. McDonald sang with great effect, his low notes being distinctly heard in the back of the gallory, especially in "Be Kind to Dear Old Granny" and "Build For Eternity." His singing of "The Ninety and Nine," "Alone in the Desert" and "Honor and Arms," from Oratorio of Sampson were fine efforts, and brought forth the great vocal powers of the singer. His Scotch songs greatly pleased the audience. Mr. McDonald showed his great elocutionary powers in "The . New Preacher," and 'The Lifeboat," the latter being one of the finest efforts ever heard here. Mra. McDonald, who accompanied him, isa musician of the first rank, her organ sclo showing that she possessed great powers with the pipe organ. The com- census of opinion of all who heard her is that she is the best accompanist heard here in years. The ladies ser- ved tea in the basement from 6:30 till § p.m. Should Mr. McDonald again visit Newburgh (and we hope this is not his last appearance here) he wil undoubtedly be greeted with a larger house than that which he so ably pleased to-night. The proceeds - are about $80. i Great preparations are being made for the closing literary of the term in the high school on Friday.
