Though there will be several parades and other spectacular features, the programme in its entivety has been so arranged as to appeal more to the student of history than to the ordin- ary sightseer. Conditions are favor able to this arrangement, as all the old buildings connected with the transfer are still standing in very much the same condition as they were a century ago. Thus the main ceremonies will take place in the Cabildo, the government house under the Spanish and French regimes, now the supreme court build- ing. It has been furnished exactly as it was on the"day of the transfer. The exercises will=ificlude the reading of the original transfer, and Claiborne, Wilkinson and other com missioners will be represented by pro- minent citizens in the costumes of the times. The religions ceremonies in the St. Louis Cathedral will be identified with those of a hundred years ago, and the salute will be fired from Jackson Square (formerly the Place d'Armes) and from cannon a century old. The colonial exhibit will remain op- Archiepiscopal pal ace, formerly. the Ursiline.. Convent, the oldest public building in the Mis- sissippi Valley. The celebrated beauties of New Orleans will dance the minuet in cos "tumes duplicating those of colonial days, and an old-fashioned New Or leans supper will| interrupt the danc ing at midnight. This event is in charge of the ladies of the Histori cal Society, its patronesses represent ing the best and oldest families ~ of New Orleans. Saturday commemora tive exercises 'will be held in the Cab ildo at which there will be addresses bv Governor Heard and the French and Spanish ambassadors followed by a military parade and a naval review before the city. In the evening the guests of the city will attend a Speci al gala performance at the French Opera House. W. J. Malley, druggist, St. George street, is also going to build a fine block on Main street. He says he is tired of doing business on a side street. Dr. Vandervoort has been appointed high trustee by. the county council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late T. H. Nasmith. The society of the A.O0.U.W. met last Tuesday evening for the election of officers, The following were clected ; Master workman, Croft, (for: merly of Kingston); foreman, Atkin Snider; . overseer, Joseph Haggerty; financial secretary, James Kimmerly; treasurer, Robert Geddes; recorder, J. The town eoun cil met last Tuesday evening to settle the year's business, As the present mayor said, when asking the votes of the ratepayers last year, that he only wished the office for ene year, we pre- sume he will not be in the field again. But they say that the thought of the large enterprises he has undertaken and not completed, bears heavily on his mind, so he would like to sit in the mayor's chair another year, in order to complete them. But rumor says that A. S. Valleau or John Dal ton would fill the position gcceptably. But these gentlemen are not striving for municipal honors. A new hy-law was pafsed, compelling all stores, ex cept druggists, to close at 7 p.m., the old one having bedn repealed, on ac count of it being declared illegal.
