The repeal of dog-tagging by-law by the city council dispenses with the services of Samuel Conley as dog- catcher, On motion of Ald, Walkem, council granted John Wright, retiring fore man of streets, an old and faithful servant, three months' salary as a retiring allowance. The proposed high license peddlers' bylaw did not come up for considera tion. In view of the opposition given the measure, those at the back of it considered it wise to hold it back to modify it somewhat. A bylaw was adopted placing the opera house license fee at £50 per an- num, The measure was given a great deal of opposition, but carried on a vote of thirteen to five. Some of the aldermen who formerly opposed low li cense foe last night spoke in favor of it, showing a change of heart. Ald. Meek spoke of thede as "the aldermen who had swallowed them selves." Ald. Hoag resented the re. mark and asked Ald. Meek to with. draw it, but he refused, and said some of the aldermen ought to feel asham- ed of themselves for the manner in which they wabbled on this measure. Mavor Bell announced that nearly all the street watering tax for 1908 had been collected.
