VLADI- ISOLATED NEWBURGH. Five Days Without Mail--Division Court Cases. Newburgh, March 7.--Last week we were without a train service entirely, the B, of Q., where not snowed in, being kept + back by ice. Large num bers of men from this village helped the company for a couple of days in their fight against the storm king. Some easily excited individual thought the Japs were going to storm \e town on Friday, but it turned %ut to be eighty men preceding Harry Whit- ing's train to clear the tmacks. Then some one was mean enough to say that' the eighty men were pulling the train through. We fared fuicdly well for mail, getting one from the south, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday evening a train came through from Yarker, bringing with it five days' mail from the north, and the genial postmaster and his assistant didn't smile a bit when five large mail bags filled to the brim found their way into the local office on Sunday evening, However, they went right to work, and in a few hours, prob ably, the largest mail ever brought into Newburgh at one tinfe was dis tributed. Last evening it started to rain and kept it up all night and to day. Tonight it has ceased and a thick fog is falling. Many cellars are flooded aud there is a great mush of water in some of the streets. Many of the kigh school students were un able to get home Friday, owing to the demoralized train service. What The Toronto Globe Says of The Beechgroves. The Beechgroves won on their mer- its. They were the better balanced team, and played the steadier game throughout. The speed was with ™Lis- towel, but they lacked the stickati- tiveness of their opponents, who plug- ged away consistently throughout, and played the game for all it was worth. Listowel's play was almost en- tirelv of an individual character. They attempted very little combination work, and nearly all their efforts were scored as the result of brilliant one- man rushes. 1 he Beechgroves showed a strenuous line of checking. They held on to their men with the greatest tenacity, and always fell back quickly to assist their defence. The winners had a little the better of it in regard to weight, and were, perhaps, the more experi enced team. The Beechgroves' defence did fine work. Macdonnell in goal, was called upon to stop many hot ones, and he was seldom found wanting. Captain Harold Clarke, 'at point, used his 130 pounds to great advantage, and did some high and lofty lifting. Vanhorne at cover, was a stellar performer. He gof the puck in every scramble, and the: Listowel forwards sere very loth to mix with him. His lifting was de- cidedly accurate and always on the spot. Two of the goals credited to the winners were the result of his efforts. On the forward line Potter and Willi ams were probably the pick. were very aroressive, and between them got six of the nine goals. Derry and Herb. Clarke were not far behind them in any respect, and deserve al- most equal credit. There was a dispute over a goal scored by "Listowel, which tied the score at the close of the 'first half. According to the watch-holders, time had expired, but as the referee had not heard their whistle, the game was allowed, under the rules. The Wins Silver Medal.
