The . management of the Grand Trunk 'railway confirm the report that the company will adopt a poliey of retrenchment in expenses as the re sult of which a number of men over the whole system will be laid off. No particular branch of the service will be affected, but from every place a man can be spared there will be an exercise of retrenchment. The neces sity, the manager explains, is due to the heavy losses incurred during the winter on account of the excessively severe weather conditions, causing heavy losses in receipts, but heavy in creased operating expenses in to try and 'keep the lines open. The general manager would not make a statement of the number of men who would -be involved in the policy of re trenchment. A SERIOUS CHARGE. . ---- Made By A Young Girl Against a Young Man. A case of attempted indecent as sault was 'heard in the police court this morning. Ethel Barron,'y pretty order girl of fourteen years, was the com plainant, and J. V. Mallen, the one charged with the assault.
