Abt all Hogan save those meant for purely utilitarian purposes, now show an elaboration of trimming once considered " ate only for the dressiest occasions. The most in- congruous materials may row be com- bined with good effect the dress- maker who tempers the flights of her originality with good taste. One finds the new Hardahger work and the heaviest lace, delicate batiste em- broidery and soft Liberty rikbon, | sheer ruchings and spangled and pal- letted medallions of et ce all upon the same gown. © eo season's wraps, like the gowns, are distinguished by their richness. They are kimono-shaped and collar- less; many show the new flat bows of velvet ribbon. The effect of trimming in courses or tiers is the latest idea. Ome sees they, laid one above the other i# flat or flounce effect, all finished alike along the lower edge, and each fuller and wider than the one above it. Linen and cotton dresses are now fashioned without a thought of. the laundry. A reign of color has superseded the { white of last year. Changeable and ombre silks, chiffons and voiles are coming into favor and bid fair to rival the little checks and hair stripes introduced in the spring. Parasols and hosiery follow the {fancy for trimming, and shoes have { the high Castilian and Louis XV hecls and are sharply pointed at the toe. London, May 10.<~Mme. Clara Butt | and a number of other well-known ar tists contributed their services to a concert held at Grosvenor House to- day, the proceeds of which will go to wa the rebuilding of the parish church of Lower Brixham, Devonshire, which was begun thirty years ago in | memory of the author Gf the celebrat ed hymn, "Abide With Me." The au thor was the Rev. Francis Lyte, who labored among the fishermen for twenty-five years, refusing all pre ferment though he was a gilted reacher and writer. At the age of Bry four he found himself doomed to die of consumption, and in sorrow at leaving his work unfinished he prayed that it might be ted to him to write something which might live ' to the glory of God when he was dead 'The result was the world-famous hymn "Abide With Me," written in the sun- iset of the last evening he ever spent at Brixham and after his last sermon to his flock. He died at Nice a month later. ---- Life A Game Of Skill. R. E. Welsh. in the Prost . Let it be said firmly that Vite is a game of «kill and not a game of chance. Sir Walter Scott puts jt thus {in a letter : "Life is like a game of j.cards~our hands are alternately good or bad, and the whole seems at first | glance to depend on mere chance. But {it is not so, for in the long run the skill of the player predominates over the casualties of the game." And Sir Walter had a right to speak, for he knew the ups and down of fortune.
