"Chaucer" Elliott, playing ball with the Concord, N.H,, team, return- ed to the city yesterday. "Chaucer" has been playing good ball, but his team were at the wrong end of the score card and lost the interest and financial support of their backers. At the first of the season the Concord team carried a force of eighteen men, but when their financial difficulties overtook them, they <oeided to out down their expenses by reducing the number of men on the team to eleven players. "Chaucer" and the other catcher were asked if either one of them would stay and do all the catching. This, however, is a well nigh impossible feat, and on their re- fusing to do so, another man was procured who promised to do so. The fulfilment of his pronvise, however, re- mains to be seen. "Chaucer's" many local frionds will be sorry to hear of his hard luck, but their regret will be mingled with joy when they consider that his return may prove a signal for a sudden boom in local baseball stock, ---- The Same Thomas Rogers. Chicago, May 30.--One of the bold est and quickest robberies Chicago has known in vears was committed Sat urday night in less than a minute at the shoe store of Frazin & Oppenheim, 165 Madison street, one square from the city hall and the oentval jolie station. One of the clerks started for- ward to meet the supposed customers when three of the men drew revolvers, each robber having two weapons, and ordered the clorks and customers to the rear of the store. The store is slichtly below the street level, hut while the robbery was in progress the doors were open and people passing along Madison street had a plain view of the inside of the store. SCOTT LECTURES. Vivid Description Of Work In Ceylon. Dr. T. B. Scott, medical missionary at Jafina, Ceylon, occupied the pulpit in the First Congregational church last evening. He gave an interesting portrayal of the customs, habits and people of Ceylon, mentioning especial- ly the work of the medical mission of the American board of commissioners for foreign missions in Jafina. The views, many of which were beautiful ly colored, gave the audience a vivid impression of the appearance of the people, their dress, houses and means of travel, also the beautiful and lux- uriant vegetation of the island. Types of the different castes from the coolie, or laboring class, to the royal personages were shown and the in- fluence of European teaching was very clearly portrayed by contrasting groups of natives in their natural conditions and after a few years of Christian instruction. This was pecially noticed in pictures of the na- tive mid-wives and the natives who have been trained as nurses in the mission hospital. Very striking pic- tures of the native idols, representing gods and goddesses, were thrown on the screen, that of one goddess being especially repugnant as--she is repre- sented as living = to inflict. suffering and torture on humanity. In striking contrast to these cruel and murderous beings the gentleness, tenderness and love of the Christian's God was cleai- ly shown. Prof. Carmichael very kind ly operated the lantern by which the views were shown. : Dr. Scott and his wife are both graduates of Queen's.
