"1 was on- n{ly a broth of a 'boy," he said "and was carrying milk to Fort Henry when I got wind of an event that stirred the entire regiment lying in the fort. It was said that a soldier-- a tailor--had stabbed his superior with a pair of shears and that the court- martial had ordered 500 lashes for the offence. I did hear that the ser- geant had so exasperated the private that he used the scissors to resent the abuse heaped upon him. T was curious enough to want to sce the flogging 20 1 was on hand the next morning and I loafed around in the barrack rooms and elsewhere until eleven o'- clock. A few minutes before that 1 saw the guard shut the gates and I heard the bolts fall. Then the regi- ment. was marched out and formed a square about a triangle which stood in the centre. The soldier stripped to the waist was marched out and fast- ened to the triangle. The doctor and provost sergeant took their places and four 'stalwart soldiers: were told off to use the knotted cat-o'-nine-tails. Then the lashing began and good and raw becisteak soon became his back, and blood trickled down his limbs before the doctor raised his hand and called a halt. The man had réceived 275 lashes | Then I saw the provost sergeant take a towel dip it in a pail of salt and water, rinse it out and throw the cold saline cloth over his shoulders. He was cut down and marched out of the gates and to the military hospital where the healing process went on. It was a horrid sight and I shall .never forget it." ---- A FIREMAN"S FALL. A Pole Gave Way And Samuel Hall Was Injured. Fireman Samuel Hall fell off a fire- alarm pole at the corner of Montreal and Ordnance streets yesterday after- noon, and eustained a few injuries, but it would take a dozen such falls to knock the life out of the veteran fire-fighter "Sammy," who doesn't mind such a pole performance a bit. In company with his brother, John Hall of No 1 Station, he was engaged taking "the fire wires off the pole, which was in a very bad condition and to be taken down. The pole was provped, and his brother was also giving support to it. Just as Fire- man "Sammy" had finished with the wires and was startine to come down, the nole gave way, falling slowly over. Along with it came the chunky fire- man, who performed the elever acro- batic feat of hupeing {he top and saving himself from being Rossead off. The distance to the eround was thir tv icet, and in due time the pole and the fireman landed, the pole under neath. However, it hoinced on strik ing the ground, and hit its rider a blow on the chin which had the same effect as a pueilist's knockout swine, Fireman Hall was gro~~ for some time afterwards. His injuries consist- ed of a split chin, a bruised nose, and two slichtly sprained wrists. His bro- ther drove hi to Dr. Sands' office, where two stitches were put in his chin, and his other injuries dressed. He thought himself fortunate in es caping so well, 'and prides himself in the manner in which he rode the pole, ------ Not Fair To The Nurses. There is a strong feeling among the friends of the Gemeral Hospital nurs es that they should not he expected by the board of governors to asstme the heavy task of cleaning the ins i- tution. Special provision should he made for the disinfecting, and the strength of the nurses not taxed by rough manual labor involved in clean ing walls, woodwork, floors and fur niture. That is not in the programme of their training, of which they are losing much just now. The greatest care is exercised in the choice of nurs- es for the institution, and even at this particular time that fact should be re membbred. In order to save expense, | the nurses' services may he utilized much against their will, but a very marked dissatisfaction will exist in many quarters, -- There Was No Quorum.
