PALMA TROPHY PHY SCANDAL. It Is Well It He Has turned. Chicago British-American. The winning of the Palma trophy for rifle shooting by the American team, in a contest with Joprose nta- tives of Great Britain and », has given rise to another A le scandal. The terms of competition demanded that cach contesttint should employ the rifle used by the regular armies of their respective countries, The British Rifle Association now charges that the American contes- tants used rifles with a barrel difier- ent from the regular service pattern. Gen. Spencer claims, in defence, that Been Re- the rifles were used in good faith, and that as "no protest was made against their use," the actiom was legitimate. The general just have an oblique idea of t most olementary morals. The obligation to wse the re- gulation weapon was absolute, and the 'American representatives knew it. That no objection was only shows that it never occurred to the other contestants that wny national representatives would resort to dis honesty to secure an uifair adven- tage. The London Thies declares that the conduct of fs American competitors "renders futther competi- tion for the trophy inpoysible for honorable gentlemen. is a pity that those who thus "tale our nation- al sportsmanship could not be to derstand that victories secured by pou means are only esteemed, here as abroad, as of degra- dation and shame, It is well tha that trophy has been returned England. -------- -- _ Toronto Street Market. Police Constables Di aod Hughes, accompanied by a couple of the you men, went L over last evening, soon found that the booty stored thtre was all stolen propertv. They secured ropes from Private McIntosh at Fort Hen- ry. and hoisted the materials from their hiding place. There were about 200 pounds of gun-cotton, 200 pounds of powder, a larger quantity of cart- ridges and fuse, a case of lyddite, a "bicycle, an oil stove and 'a sewing machine. The bicycle was iA one stolen a few months ago from Dr. Anglin's. Most of the ammunition be- longs to the Royal Military College The chief of police sent over a wag- gon, and the booty was brought to the city and locked up. . Why the things were placed in that out-of-thi- ~way tower was a mystery to the police at first, but the two constables who took charge of the matitr think they have a clue, and there may be some developments in a day or two. It is suspected that the thieves were getting readv to take the stolen goods across the river to¥ tht States. There may be more stolen goods in that' vicinity, and no doubt next Sunday will see a laree number of strollers makine an examination of the old fortifications, which make ad- mirable hiding-places.
