Port Dover, Aug. 10.--~That Yankee yachtsmen must ohserve the law on the occasion of their visits to Port Dover was proved beyond a doubt by the action of the civic authorities hore in apprehending seven sports alleged to have been responsible for tearing down the corner stone of the new Port Dover town hall early Monday morning. ' The stone was heaved out of place and thrown out in streets with its contents. The stone was laid on July lst. Reeve Ross was told of the oe- currence and suspected the Yankees. London, Aug. 9.--An amazing situa- tion has been created in Scotland by' a decision of the House of Lords by which over one hundred churches and colleges for the training of ministers and teachers in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen and property variously estimated at from £4,000,000 to £10; 000,000 (312,000,000 to £50,000,- 000) pass into the hands of ministers of the Free church living . mostly in the far northern counties of Inverness- shire, Ross and Cromarty. The question to be decided was fier: o which ody ought 'property podsessed hy thd undivided Free'ehireh ior to 1 belong to the new | United Free church or to the dissen- tient minority, who refused to be par- ties to the union, now 'calling them- selves the Free church of Scotland ? The latter body still claims to hold unchanged the doctrines and prinei- ples of the original Free church, which was founded by Dr. Chalmers, at the disruption in 1843. On the contrary, the United Free church has adopted an elastic constitution, in which pleni- tude of freedom is conceded * to its ministers and members and the funda- mental doctrines relegated to the limbo of open questions. The House of Lords has decided in favor of the minority, the "wee kirk- ers" as they are called. And what are the "wee hijors to do? Most of these twentyfour ministers have no experience that would enable, them. to administer the funds of. the church property, even if they had enough young men for the training calleges | and enough ministers to take the churches. It is pointed out by some leading members of the. United Free church that if the judgment of the House of Lords were followed faith- fully the church would: be unwork- able. Other prominent United Free church men are of opinion that the decision is by far the most important matter in connection with Scotland, which has occurred since thé Reformation, and that it cuts at the directly form- ed wish of the great mass of the peo- e. P Nothin can exaggerate the supreme state of bewilderment and confusion that prevails in Scotland. It means that if the decision is pressed to its logical conclusion over a thousand ministers of the United Free church will find themselves homeless, and over a thousand congregations will be left without a place to hold their meetings, while students will be ejoct- ed from all their colleges and institu- tions. ° Canadian Engineers In Session.
