Ottawa Free Press Dr. Forin, a wellknown practitioner from Edmonton, speaks enthusiastically of progress of his town--the best spot on earth, ip his gfision. medical 9 at is our present population ? he asked. "Just about 8,000, and it was given at 2.500 in the census of 1901. How's that for growth ? In 1003, there were 570 private dwellings erect- ed, and the pace is being kept up. This year there are hali dozen big business blocks going up, and the town is tak- ing on 5 substantial air not often seen in 86~young a place. We are only go town yet but are applying to the leg- islature for a city charter, and expect fo get it. Strathcona, the town across the river from us, has 3,000 inhakit ants and is_tHfivin, and prosperous." Dr. Foriw"has little doubt of the complete success of the liberal party in the federal elections in the North- West. The policy of the C.P.R. in giv- ing preference to one town over an- other in the matter of rates is felt sq keenly by the more isolated towns and cities in the North-West--those that depend on one line of communication with fhe outside world--that the policy of the government in aiding a com- peting transcontinental line is endors- ed by all classes, irrespective of poli- tics or party affiliation. The discrimin- ation is so marked that it is felt by all, and the result will be that the lib. erals are assured of nine seats out of ten from the territories. ¥ Dr. Forin is gn old resident of King- ston, and has many acquaintances hereabouts, Corsets. Alta. - ~ TBL00D SHED A Fierce Battle North Of i Yental. CANNONADING GOES ON FIERCELY ALONG ENTIRE FRONT. Russians Think Kuropatkin's Greater Numbers Must Tell-- Nodsu May Get . Oyama's Place--Japanese Gunboat Lost --Nodzu Gets Credit. Special to the Whig London, et. 12.---A Mukden de- spatch, dated yesterday, says: A bloody battle is now raging about six miles sorts of Yentai- railroad Station. The Japancse, on Sunday, fell back along the whole front, i the Russian ance guards crossed the Schili river (about half way be- tween Mukden and Lino Yang), came within three miles of Yentai, but Joutardny the Japanese received strong reinforcements of infant [ artillery, and not only held thelr pans tions, but assumed the offensive. The fighting lasted the entire day and night. The Japanese directed their artillery fire with great skill, and searched the Russian position so fiercely that the Russians fell hack north of Sehili river, which crosses the railway seven miles from Yentai. The Russians, this morning, resumed their advance, once more crossed the Schili river, and engaged the Japan- ese two miles south of it. A terrific artillery engagement is proceeding along the entire front. The result of the battle is still undecided. A Temporary Check. St. Petersburg, Oct. 12. (210 am.) --Severe fighting north of Yentai, re sulting in «a temporary check of Gen. Kuropatkin's advance guard, is not regard at war office as indicating a general engagement. The latest offi. cial despatches, indicating the disposi- tion of the various - corps show that the wholé army is not yet in line of battle. '1 hy present engagement, there- fore, may be regarded as the result of a counter attack, which an enter prising foe like the Japanese might be expected to make, but without any calculation to prevent the Russian advance. Gen, Kuropatkin's present A faputiorisy in numbers, it jis held here sooner or later to com: the Japenese to fall back upon their strong position which is in the tri- angle formed by Yentai, Lino Yang, and Sikwantung. Everything points to this district as being the pros- pective sceme of the decisive struggle of this year's campaign. Give No. Adequate Idea. London, Oct "1¥2 he reports which the correspondents with either army bave hitherto been allowed to send of the resumption of operations, do not give anything like an accurate con- ception of what is actually happening south of Mukden. There was un- doubtedly sharp fi hting last Sunday and Monday, but there is nothin au- thentic indicating that the whole of the rival armies were eng . So far as can be ascertained, the Russian left flank began early on Sunday morning to attempt to turn Gen. Kuroki's right flank. Fighting lasted all day, but with 'what result. if any, is not known. The critics, however. do not expect early news of a decisive battle, believing that the series of en- gogements that has begun is similar to those preceding the battle at Liao Yang. Bennett Burleigh, sends fromy Shang- hai to the Daily Telegraph. some re- nrarkable information received from Japan. Mr. Burleigh says it is be- lieved that Field Marshal Oyama and his stall will return or be recalled to Japan. ostensibly because the army is going into winter quarters, and that Gen. Nodeu will take over the command. "It is well-known amongst the better classes of Japanese," Mr. Burleigh adds, "that it was Gen. Nodzu who saved the - situation at the battle of Liao Yang. Gen. Oyama and the headquarters had actually ordered a retreat, when Gen. Node vigorously protested against such a step, and begged them to make an- other effort, he more directly co- operating with Gen. Oku's right. To Gea. Nodeu, therefore, is due the sole tredit of avoiding a disastrous re: treat which he warded off by sending in, and almost sacrificing, the entire 20th Regiment of the tenth division." Desperate Sorties Made. St. Petersburg, Oct. 12.<In a de spatoh to the emperor, Gen. Stoessel conlirms the report - that desperate sorties from Po.' Arthur were made on October Sth and 6th. and states that the Russians. with greatly in- ferior forces, repulsed the Japanese four times, and captured ten Hotch- kiss guns. Gunboat Heiyen Lost. Tokio, Oct. 12.<The loss of the armoured gunboat Heiven is officially announced. The Heiyen struck a mine off Pigeon Bay, on the night of Seb- tember 18th aul foundered. Nearly thirty persons, her entire complement. were drowned. Two petty officers and two sailors managed to reach Chiao Pai Island, from which they were res- cued. Retvisan's Attempt. London, Oct. 12.--A despaich to the Telegraph from Shanghai states that Japanese advices have heen received to the effect that in addition to send- ing two fresh divisions to Liao Yang and many contingents to Port and elsewhere, Japan has sent a div i Gensan, Korea, 10 which pl another division will be sent. Tt declared that these divisions will make a demonstration from Possoit against Vladivostok. Correspondents and attaches have been allotted to this force, but it is probable that Saghalien and not Vladivostok is the real objective. The despatch adds that an immense number sick and wounded have been taken back to Japan. It is stat- ed that there are thirty thousand in the Kobe district alone." All the tem. ples and hospitals are full, but there i little difficulty in obtaining any number of men to serve at the front. The supply seems to be practically limitless, A GREAT FIRE. Did Serious Damage In Winni- peg. Special to the Whi Winnipeg, Oct. 12.--The biggest fire in the history of Winnipeg started about ten o'clock, last night, in the heart of the retail district. It origin. ated in Bullman Bros'. building, a new ®ix storey structure just com: leted. From there it spread to Ash- owns, the largest retail hardware os- tablishment in the west. Both of these places were completely destroyed. Some three or four small stores and houses at the rear of Ashdowns were also destroyed. The fire was under control at the building north of Ash- downs. A s south wind gave the firemen 4 hard light. At one time it looked as though the entire block would go. The loud and continuous explosions of cartridges and other explosives in Ashdowns add- ed to the impressiveness of the scene. The loss will run far into the dreds of thousands, that of the Ash- downs alone being placed at nearly half a million. So far as known no lives were lost and no person was in- jured p48. 4.4 MAY OPEN IN GANADA. -- Crs The Corporation's Agent Col- lecting Data. Special to the Whig Halifax, N.8.. Oct. 12.10 is report. ed here that the United States Steel Corporation is seriously * Gonsidering the establishment in Canada of a large plant for the manufacture of steel rails and steel Hy. Its agents are collecting data regarding output, consumption, etc., as well as selecting a location for the proposed works. When the work is finished the uestion will be settled. The new uty of 87 a ton on steel rails com- pletely shuts out the American rail manufacturers and as their Canadian market is becoming a very important one, the only way out of the diffenlty is 'to build a manufacturing plant in this country. Experts say that a plant such as the steel corporation would like to put up would cost from twelve to thirteen million dollars. HE WILL GO BACK. A Man Arrested In For Crime. Special to the Whig ontreal, Oct. 12.~George Tremblay, bricklayer, twenty years of age, who is wanted in Springfield, Mass., for breaking and entering into Wiildings, was arrested, vesterday, at his home at St. Henri, where he was residing with his parents, Tremblay, with two other companions, into several places in Springfield last winter. His companions were caught and sent to the penitentiary, but Tremblay got away and went to Chicage, where he worked for two months and then came to Montreal. He has expressed his willingness to return to 'Springfield, and Inspector Quilty, of he Spring: field police, will arrive here, to-day, to take him back there. FINE ELEVATOR. Built And Operated.
