A very large and sreciative audi- ence it -- ® hich ered in Syden- bam Street Methodist. church, yester- day afternoon. The attraction was a recital of sacred music, given under the auspices of the Whatsoever Circle of The King's Daughters, of which Miss Beatrice Tandy is president, and the net result was the addition of a large sun to the funds of the Sailors Institute. 5 f th Thé programme of music was of the highest order of exccllence, and ras followed gwith - the closest aliention and the most delighted interest. The restdted and completed organ, mon one of the finest, as well as one oO the ¢ in Canada, was heard to, Tantage under the master-touch of Mrs. A. R. B. Williamson, and: the Sydenham street people certainly are to be congratulated upon their pos- session of such an instrument, and upon having it in such competent hands. pd Upon Mrs. Williamson, naturally, fell the brunt of the responsibility for the success of the occasion, and' to her corresponding 'credit 'is due,' Her solo selections were of the mdst va- ried character possible, consistent with the high standard of 'selection, and with the utter absence of ~ the meretricigusly popular, and her ac- campaniments were, as always, excel: lent, The 'programme opened with Guilmant's Sonata in D minor--a brilliant number, brilliantly executed, and bringing out many of the fine combinations and contrasts * of which the organ is capable. At a later stage Mrs. Williamson contributed a triple number, Mendelssohn's Duetta, from the Songs Without Words; Dudley Buck's Holy Night, and, Nevin's grace- ful little "Slumber Song." Gounod's March le Cortege was a stately and imposing finale, Several favorite vocalists contribu- ted very materially to the pleasure and success of the occasion. Miss Beatrice Tandy sang a delightful sct- ting of Bishop Brooks' always wel come carol "0 1ittle Town of Bethle- hem," a selection from a cantata "The Holy Infant," the familiar words of the carol preceded by the prophetic recitative "And Thou, Beth- Foam." Miss Tandy sang with ten- derness and passion, and her per- fectly clear enunciation added great- ly to the pleasure of her hearers, Mr. Kelso sang "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" (Perry)--a sclection well suited to his mellow tenor voice, Miss Mona Knight's sweet soprano voice was heard to great advantage in the song "Light From Heaven' (Gounod-Holden). Finally, Mrs. An- drews contributed Liddle's dramatic setting of the familiar hymm-words "Abide With Me." Mrs. Andrews isa welcome name on any programme, and she sang, as always, with artistic taste and perfect enunciation, the notes. of her higher. register in parti- cular being very clear and beautiful. With wrtists like these, invidious criticism would be quite out of place. They have the satisfaction of know- ing that their music, not only added very considerably to the funds of a deserving institution, but also gave unmixed pleasure to a great number of appreciative listeners on the thresh- hold of the new year.
