GRAND OPERA HOUSE, Hyde Vaudeville Artists Not Up To Expectations. Mr. Cartwright, 'was opened with a hymn and prayer hy Rev. Douglas Laing, pastor of the church. The see- retary of the sopiety, Rev. Mr, Me- Callum, then: gave the annual report outlining the beneiits and needs of the society. No less than 14,000 children have been dealt with since the or- ganization of the society in }881. Nr, Me- Callum, : Judge McDonald was the next speak- er. He commended the excellent re- port read by the secretary, He said that we must put forth efforts in be- half of the work and we must con- sider the enviromments in which we are now placed. In the old times life was far different from what it is now. Children are too much out of doors away from home &t night. The hd from that life up a generation which has done gro work in our country. The chil- ren of to-day have many advantages that the past generation had not. There has beeri a complete change in all ways, and' new methods must be adopted to deal with the circumstan- ces. Legislation is not, as many peo- ple think, a panacea for all evils, The children of to-day do not display the same respect to their elders and this tendency of childern, of to-day must be tuken Into consifleration. The re- moval of the reformatory at Ions tanguishene was a good thing as the institution, although Probably well conducted, had a tendency to hreed criminals. We have, however, the in- dustrial school at Mimico, where boys of all ages are received and if possible sent out for adoption. The expense of the management of this institution causes hesitation . on the part of magistrates in sending youthful crim inals to the institation for mainten- ance at the expends, of the municipal ity. A grant should be set aside by county and city cowmcils to be used for this purpose. The speaker spoke at considerable length on the troubles of 'friendless and homeless boys who are left to be taken care of Ly the society. There is considerable difficnlty experienced in dealing ' with some of these children, where sometimes unnatural parents endeavor to rid themselves of their children at the public expense. The speaker also gave instances of cruelty 10 children which are discovered hy the agents of the society in diflerent places. He also advocated the use of the lash upon mep who were convict- ed of cruelty to children, Ho spoke favorably of the custom adopted by the local police magistrate, of whip- ping youthful eriminals in preference to other punishments. The speaker closed his interesting address with a brief review of the "provincial laws regarding the {reatment of youthful criminals and asked his hearers to do all in their power to carry out this legislation. oe ; A collection was taken up in aid of the society after which a vote of thanks was extended' to Judge Me- Donald on motion of Archdeacon Mac- morine and Rev. After returning home from the city, about 2 p.m., Mr. Sudds left for Wolfe Island ferry to cast his vote, and his wife took the children over to her motherin-law's, Mrs, Charles Sudds', who lived about a mile away. About half past four o'clock it was discovered that the house was ablaze, and that everything they pos- sessed in the world, save the old clothes they were wearing were being uickly consumed by the fiery monster. t would ' scem" that the contents of the house were almost 'entirely des- troyed before the flames burst into view. Mr. Eaves holds a policy for $300 on the house. Mr. Sudds did not have anything on the contents, and, therefore, suffers a complete and in numberless ways, an irreparable loss. To make matters worse, upon arriv- al home from Kingston, the entire fa- mily very largely changed its wearing apparel, the result being that a new overcoat, belonging to Mr. Sudds, Mrs. Sudds' hest clothes, and even a cute little robe belonging to baby Doris, seven months old, together with many little gifts from Santa Claus, including a toy bank, containing ah out five dollars, the savings of litle Arthur, three vears old, weére ~ des troyed, leaving the family to-day with- olit- even g change of raiment.
