Business Troubles The Cause -- Some Manufacturers Protest- ing Against Some Members Of New Merger Directorate. fal to the Whig. : Battal, Jan, 13.~Arthur Verner, a clerk, twenty-five years of age, at- tempted to comsnit suicide in his fa- ther-in-law's residence, 'St. Elizabeth street, by shooting himself near the heart. He was hurried in an ambul- ante to Notre Dame Hospital, where * that the bullet had just missed pass- ing throligh his heart, and had lodged in the small of the back. His chances of recovery are slight. Verner had been in Winnipeg for about six months and returned to Montreal, with his wife a few days ago. He was in trouble with his employer, in Winni- peg, over some money matters, and it is supposed that is what was preying onshis mind, and was the reason for his attempt to end his life. A number of Canadian mauufactue- ers, whose raw material is the com- mon products of the mills going into the Dominion Textile merger. are working up a protest against Messrs. Black and Gordon being placed on the directorate of the new combine. Gordon is connected with the Stand ard Shirt company, the largest of the kind in Canada, while Black is a large manufacturer of ladies' white wear. The outside manufacturers object o being placed in the position of hav- i material from their competitors, who would have a great advantage. Mr. Allen. a Toron to manufacturer, is in the city, to-day, seeing the trade and it js proposed to take the matter before the govern- ment if necessary. "'Dick" Mills Will Play Goal For Queen's. In the meeting between the Cadets I. and Queen's II. teams of the inter- mediate intercollegiate series, Queen's intermediates are much stronger, than last season, and they are filled with a determination to avenge the Cadets' decisive victories last season. The Queen's men will be further strength- ened by "Dick" Mills, who has con sented to guard the goal net against the onslaughts of the soldiers. 'Dick' was unable to go to Montreal with seniors, and his addition to the inter mediate team will be a welcome sur: prise to the Queen's supporters, Cadets are also strong again, this vear, as was shown in their exhibition game at Perth. They have been prac- tising steadily, and are in the best of condition. The chances of both teams are good, and a red-hot contest is as- sured. Up to a late hour, this after- noon, the referee of the game was not appointed. It was thought that "Chaucer" Flliott would act, but he was wanted at Peterboro. Off For Montneal. Queen's seniors left at noon to-day or Montreal, where they will to-night open the senior intercollegiate season when they meet the McGill team. The match will be played at Victoria rink which, although not as large as the Arena, will still afford sufficient ice space for the fast locals to ent rings around their opponents, The chances of Queen's winning out to-night look extremely good and by doing so the championship would be cinched for Queen's for another season at least.
