The immediate cause of the great wars of history has often been a sur- prisingly trivial accident. It is said incidentally thet no two wars have ever been brought about in exactl the same way. Mere jests have often caused dreadful wars. ln ghe time of William the Conqueror, for im stance, it was a jest pure and simple that brought about the war between ¥ugland and France and ultimately cost the great William his life. One day his contemporary Philip of France delicately remarked at dinner that William was "like a fillet of beet on castors and ought to be ex- bibited at a prize monarch show." William heard of this and in a furi- ous rage ordered his troops to in- vade a. once. This was dome, and a war commenced, which ended in the English King being thrown from his horse and killed while superintend- ing the siege of Mantes. - A more re- cent case is told of Frederick the reat, who nearly caused a war with Fnglana by referring to King Ceorge as "'a bloated ox.' In a recent war between the army of Feuador and that of a neighbor- ing State ceusiderable damage had Leen done before any explanations were forthcoming. Then it transpired that the rival armies had been ';nanoeuvring" om the frontjer rath- er too near each other, and could not resist the temptation to try con- ¢iusions. The only recemt case in Furope of a formal declaration of war: made before actual operations were begun was that of the Franco- Trussiar war in 1870. The first inti- mations of the intentions of the Boers in their war came out of the nwzzles of their Mausers. ec------ Saw Himself As Others See Him. Sir Henry Irving, whose stage ca- reer covers forty-eight years, has ac- quired many striking mauperisms during that time. Ope day when he wus ill and. rehearsing understudies to play his parts he chose a par- ticular actor to play Richelieu, At the end of the rehearsal Sir Henry called the histrion to him and said: "Why did you deliver that last speech in such 'a curious manner, and why did you go off the stage so spasmodically " 'It's the way you do it, Sir Hen- yy And all the great tragedian was! Good Heavens!™ Sir Henry tells a story about J. L. Toole, the famous comedian. On one occasion Toole lent a rather un- reliable man a sovereign, never ex- pecting to see the money again. To his amazement the man turned up and paid the sovereign back with many thanks. Some weeks after the same individual requested the loan of £5. "No, no!' said Mr. Toole. "You deceived me once." You won't get the chance of doing it again." ee pee said An Ecclesinstienl Umbrella. An umbrella big enough Lo cover a dozen persons belongs to the Church of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, Eng- land. It is used on wet days for wedding: parties, so that the bride and bridegroom, the bridesmaids and guests may not get their smart dress- es spoiled when walking from the church door to the carriages.
