They take milk baths: They bathe their faces daily in real sweet cream, They have their entive faces skinned, #0 that a new skin may grow over the old surface, They have their noses shaped, They shave their eyebrows into a perfect arch. They have their lips shaped into a Spid's how, hey have all nature's fine hairs re- moved from dhe skin by plectrolysis. They have real dimples cut in their cheeks and chins. They have good strong erooked teeth removed and artificial straight ones screwed on to the stumps. They go into complete retirement for six months at a time, are "done over," and perfect beauties. They have artiheial figures built in their frocks ond artificial instops made in their slippers. . But it is not all wasted time. Never has the world been so crowded with beautiful women ! Never have there been so many unbesutifal women who have produced the illusion of beauty. Mines Started Again. Piccadilly, March 1.--~The Baryta mines have wtarted again with Don- ald 8. E. Sta. vert Curator--Will Affect Sev- veral Firms--Third Smallest Bank in Canada. I to the Whig. Halifax, N.5., March 6. Rumors that the Bank of Yarmouth, with headquarters at Yarmouth, has sus payment, are freely circulated in Halifax. It is feared that a num- bet of firms throughout the province will be more or less affected. For the past week there has been more of less talk of a mation with the Union Bank of Halifax, and negotiaf were supposed to have been in gress towards that end. -- Named a Curator. Montreal, March 6.---The Canadian Bankers' Association has appointed W. EB. Stavert, general manager of the Bank of New Brunswick, curator of the Bank of Yarmouth, the suspen- sion of which' was announced to-day. This is the firet instance of the kind since the amendment of the Canadian banking act, conferring enlarged pow- ers on the banking association. The Bank of Yarmouth, which is the third smallest institution of the kind in Canada, was recently examined hy prominent hankers of Halifax, who advised suspension. ------------------ 2 THE RETAIL MERCHANTS To Blame For Not Patronizing City Wholesalers. Kingston, March 5.---(To the Edis tos) : In your issue of the 4th inst, you published an account of a meeting of retail merchants called for the pur. hose" 'of uniting that body with the etail Merchants' Association of Can- ada. The chief grievance, as far as 1 can understand, is that the consumers are buying a lot of goods from large departmental stores in other cities, who sell cheaper, but inferior goods. Now I would just like to bring a point before the notice of our retail men in the city, | have no objections to them being united, in fact they should be, but 1 would suggest that they examine themselves, and make sure that there i¢ not a beam in their own eye. Do the retail men buy, as far as possible, from wholesalers, in the city and keep the money in ciroulation at home ? 1 think I ean safely say that they. do not. Ow many occasions not only small consignments have come to the city, but eardoads of goods, to he divided amongst woveral retail stores here, sold by wholesale merchants in Toronto and Montreal, while exactly the same goods can be supplied by Kingston wholesalers at the same price. And again, the retsil men say the wholesaler must not sell the con. sumers, but they reserve the right to give out-of-town wholesalers the pre ference when conditions are equal, This is just a little explanation to show, that the retailer of the gity is not the only one who has a grievance. --AN OBSERVER. et ------ A CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR A To Preach and Lecture at Queen's In April.
