THE LABOR SITUATION. The Carpenter's Have Packed Their Kits. The differences between employees and employ have, to-day, assumed a more definite form, in one case the trouble having been amicably arranged and in another the non-agreement of the contractors to the terms of their employees having resulted in the latter packing up their kits and lay ing off work until some settlement is reached, The boss tinsmiths and their em- ployees met, last night, at the invita- tion of the latter, for "a joint confer. ence in the Trades and Labor Hall Both parties were well represented at the mecting and the discussion which ensued was of the most friendly char acter and resulted i in a compromise and settlement, both sides making some concessions, The employees' de mand for an increase from $1.75 to $2.25 per day for the minimum wage was the main sticking point and here after some argument a settlement was made by halving the difference dnd fixing the minimum wage at $2 day. Some other ¢¥anges of lesser portance were made at the wish both sides and the result is that further trouble may this year, at least. The carpenters differences with their employees have, however, resulted more serions developments, ' morning, all union carpenters employ- ed on different building and job works, ceased working on account of their employers failure to comply within the stipulated time. The men are demand ing a £22.50 wage for five nine hour days, with the same wage for eight hours work on Saturday. This last item is said to be the chief grievance with the employers and they refuse to pay a full day's pay for eight hour work. The carpenters meet in their rooms tonight and the contractors ol no bo expected for in meet on Monday night so that it is expected that a joint meeting will be arranged early next week The masons' affairs have not vet reached' a climax as the employers sti'l have another month to sign th agreement submitted by the mason THE DATES FIXED For Dominion Rifle Association Meeting.
