This may take a wi or a month. General Manager McNieoll, of the C. P. R. was interviewed, to-day. Fes Qocting the report telegraphed from inmipeg to the effect that the com- pany would undertake a new plan in connection with their maintenance . of ways department, in thé west, which has several miles of tracks to look after. The alleged plan was to hand this department over to a number of private contractors, who would keep the lines in order. This, it. was said, would" affect: a large number of - the present employees of the company, but- fortunately jor them, Mr. Nicoll says, there is nothing whatever in the report, . Two city hall clerks, named Tremp and Bunpt, were arrested yesterday, on a charge of forging corporation cheques, and it ia believed that the total amount, through the issuance of the forgeries, will amount to $800, mostly in small amounts. One works in the city treasurer's office and the other in the city comptroller's office, and they stole a bunch of corporation cheques from a hook and after forg- ing a proper sigmature the rest was easy work. They had no difficulty in cashing them at stores. In due time the cheques returned to the city hall when the discovery was made, and in- vestigation started, and resulted in the arrest of the two named above. a -- COBDEN STALLION SHOW Venture Was a Success and Will § Be Annual Event. The spring stallion show at Cobden under the auspices of the township agricultural society of Ross and Brom- ley was a marked success and credit. is due the committee who had charge. Ten stallions. from the surrounding district were shown and the attend: ance of farmers was fairly large, des: pite the fact that the weather was fa- vorable for seeding. Prizes were not awarded. J. G: Clark, Ottawa; gave an informal talk on the selection of a sire and breeding and answered - the questions asked by the farmers who sought information. Charles Virgin, Dunmore, exhibited a Percheron, six years old, and weigh- ing about 2,000 pounds. M. Stafford, Renfrew, showed a Percheron, and a Hackney. R. Graham, Renfrew, had on exhibition the black Percheron horse recently purchased from R. W. Mec- Lellan,' Forresters' Falls, showed harness. The (imp.) thoroughbred Clydesdale stallion "Prince of Dove- hill," owned by Robert Strutt, Pem- broke, was also on exhibition. The show was in charge of John Jardine, president of the agricultural society; A. H. Box, and C. B. Miner, and so well pleased were the members of the committee with their first ven- ture that they decided to hold a stal- lion fair annually. The directors say that the township exhibition, this fall promises to be the best. held hy the society in recent years. The prize list has undergone a thorough revision. September 21st and 22nd have been selected as dates for the exhibition. REGULATORS" Retail Glerchants Take Steus to Rectily Existing Evils. During 1904 Great Britain imported $32,755,000 worth of eggs. Of this to- tal nearly $10,000,000 worth were re- 000,000 from Germany, upwards of $4, 000,000 from Belgium, and nearly $3, 500,000 from France. Canada's con- tribution to the total was. 3630,000, as compared with something over $1,000, 000 the year before. | The Canadian Commercial Agent in Leeds, in a report to the government, says that the export to the govern ment, says that the export egg trade of Canada would be immensely aided by forming co-operative = associations for collection and export of eggs, such as now exist in Denmark, The agent further reports that even better results might be secured by co- operation in exporting apples to Great Britain. The Federated Association of Fruiterers of England, with its num- erous branch associations, offers, he says, an inviting field for co-operative fruit associations in Canada to deal with the English consumer. In this connection it may be noted that the export of Tasmanian apples has, according to the Canadian agent in Australia, assumed immense propor- tions, Tasmanian production this year amounting to 1,000,000 cases, KILLED HIS FATHER.
