The income tax in Great Britain is levied an $3,300,000,000 of annual in- come, and produces B155,000,000 of revenue for the government. If Gibson Bowles is right in saying that only-one-third of the national in- come pays the tax, the total incomes of the United Kingdom must he $10. 500,000,000, a sum almost incon- ceivably vast, That is only $244 a year for each petsen if it were equally divided. It sn't. Less than 750,000 persons have more than half the total income. From money invested abroad alone Great Britain's capitalists probably receive $1,200,000,000 a vear of in- come, though no one éan tell exactly. It is probable that the total of pri- vate incomes, great and small, in the United States is over $25,500,000,000, though the sum cannot so closely es- timated as in the island kingdom. Child Nearly Choked. The little daughter of a servant at the Royal Military College came near meeting death hy suffocation this morning. The child was amusing her- self playing with "jacks," and thoughtlessly placed one of the play- things in her month. In the operation the child's mouth and throat were painfully lacerated. Variety In Vegetables.
