D., of Cincinnati, editor of the West ern Christian Advoeate, had some hard things to say about Sunday school music. It was in an address on the relation of the religious and secul ar press to the Sunday school. There were several things that a little' work on the part of the church editors would remedy. Aud one of thése was Sunday school hymns. There was a need of better music for the hymns sung in the average school. as it was enough to make the angels weep so deplorably bad were they. There was an ignorance among the children of the grand old hymns of our fathers, Instead we had squishy-squashy and ephemeral tunes set to mere doggerel. Even children would come home and ask why they did not sing nice songs in Sunday schools like they did in dav schools. Tt wae not for lack of good hymns, because English hvmnology was blessed with some of the grand: est music. and most beautiful poems to be found in the world. Present Negotiations Are Likely to Result in Reaching a Basis of An Agreement--The Chief Danger to Peace. Snacial to the Whig, { Lomdon, June 28.--While it is diffi cult to reconcile the Berlin and Paris versions' of Germany's reply to the French note, there seems to be justifi cation for the inference that the kais- er has considerably modified his bel ligerent attitude. This is undoubted ly due to the decisive stand taken by Great Britain in support of French position. It must not be. inferred that German ambitions will be aban doned, but it is hoped they will be considerably, modified, and, perhaps, turned in another direction.¥ The situ ation is still extremely delicate, but advices from Berlin and Paris agree that the present negotiations are like- ly to result in reaching a basis of an agreement, The Berlin correspondent of the Ex press says that = President Roosevelt, at Emperor Williams' request, inter vened in the Morocco controversy to the extent of advising Gieat Britain to aid in the interests of peace.
