A Woman Proved to Be His Nemisis--He Robbed Het and 'She Had Reven ous Deaths Among His Many Wives. JOHANN HOCH. Special to the Whig. Chicago, July 28.--Johann Hoch, to have been hanged, to-day, has 'been itved by Gov. Dinesh until the middle of September. Dr. Liston Montgomery, a well known physician, accompanied by a woman whose name was said to be Mrs. May Wilson, appeared at the jail, about two hours before the time set for murderer Hoch's execution, and stated 'that money was available to take Hoch's case' to the supreme court. The jailer postponed the exe- cution until this afternoon, and it Was announced that Hoch's attorney would talk to the governor by lomg- distance telephone as soon as possible. If Johann Hoch is guilty of half the crimes charged against . him he truly deserved to be called the meod- ern "Bluebeard." The only case '#f- fording anything like a parallel in the police recards of late years was that of Knapp, the Cincinnati murderer, who was executed at Columbus a oh ple of years ago, convicted of the murder of one of his wives and sws- pected of killing several other women and young girls, Hoch married Mrs. Mary Hendrickson under the name of Schmidt in 1963. left her shortly afterward * and married a Mrs. Walker. Both women lived in' Chicago. Mrs. Walker died about a month after her marria; e, and it was charged that Hoch pois- oned her in order that he might mar- ry her sister, Mrs. Emilic Fischer. Ft was Mrs, Fischer who proved to be Hoeh's nemesis, His long career of marital duplicity was halted by this German woman, who had accumulated by years of frugality the small for. tune of $750, rs, Fischer married Hoch in Joliet last January, trusting in his words of promise and kindness, ei days after her sister, Mrs. Walker-Hoch, had died a sudden and mysterious death. The day after the wedding Hoch decamped with all her savings. The last Mrs. Hoch complained the police and an investigation was at once set on foot. Steps were token to apprehend the fugitive should he undertake to retum to Germany. The progress of the investigation de- many startling discoveries tending to connect Hoch with similar operations with many women. Tho police declared that he had at least fifteen wives within ten years, and among that number it was said that at least six them died under cir- cumstances 'which were regarded as suspicious. Three of the women died in Chicago, while the othe disap- ford mysteriously from Milwaukee, t. Louis, and one of two other cit- to jes where Hoch lived] Mrs, Mary Becker;Hoeh was said to have died mysteriously in St. Louis in 1902, Mrs. Mary Schultz-Hoch disappeared from Argus, Ind., in 1900, a Mrs. Lena Hoch died in Milwaukee about two years ago. Hoch was positively identified as the husband of all Ol these women, as well as of three or four whom he married in Chicago. His purpose appears to have been in all cases to obtain the money which his wives had saved, and in the case 'of Mrs, R. Mary Steinbrecker, who died ysteriously in Chicago a short time after the marriage to Hooch, it is knawn that he obtained al least $1,000, Hoch's methods" with such of his wives as he did not find it necessar, to otherwise dispose of was illustrated c Anna Schmidt- Hendrickson-Hoch, one of the women ho deserted. © He 'married this 'woman in Hammond,, Ind, in 1903. Two days later he 'fled with $500 which she had Saved. The day after the marriage he went to her and told her he was heir to an estate in Germany, A fow hours later he hurried in with a fake cablegram * which read : "Father js Your brother William." * told his wife that $21,000 was coming to him from his father's oes. tate, and that she leave for Germany night. He said he had no money for the voyage and succeeded: in obtaining from her the 8500 the had in the bank, As soon as he had secured the money he left Hanmimond and his wife did not see or hear of him again until his ar- must prepare to with him the next an foway. Alter his disappear- ance from Chicago the newspapers of the country were flooded with hisepie- tures and accounts of his alleged crimes. About 5 month ago , good woman, if ever there was. one, a widow, adored by her tenants and wpeople, and the benefactress of crowds of miserable be. ings who never asked in vain for her charity, was waited upon by a deputation fromthe village over which she ruled, who adddressed her in these words : ' "Little mother, vou know how much we love you. You have always been most generous and amiable of mistresses. We should be ready at any other time to give our lives for yours, But now, if the revolutionary commit- tee should order us to assassinate you we should do it, because, for us, 'the committee's orders are law. There fore, it is, little mother, that we come to implore you before they speak, in this sense, to go away."
