Village Counts Increase of 500-- Polishing Plant, Shipping Wharves, Summer Cottages, Club House and Other Acces-, sories" Already Loom Up in Expectation. Clayton, N.Y., July 30.--Clayton at a single stroke may add 500 to her population and locate a fine industry with untold ities within her limits. Aap patios of the coming stir fill the air and citizens and merchants are preparing for the event. All rests with C. G. Emery, of New York{ the millionaire owner of Frontenac and extensive real estate in the Thousand Island region. A short time ago Mr. Emery pur- chased grants of land on Picton Is land, a small isle south-east of Grind- stone Island, for $5,000; to-day the once discarded tract is valued at over a million dollars and promises to be of international importance because of the wealth which it contains below the surface. Expert geologi have pronounced the inexhaustible granite quarries buried there to be superior to any in this country and the equal of the famous Aberdeen quarries of Scotland, which have supplied the world with its greatest monuments, but aré now practically useless be cause of the great depth to which they have been driven in an effort to secure the valuable stone. The discovery by Mr. Emery of the great importance of his new possession accounts for the coming boom to Clayton. It will be the attempt to successfully quarry the mineral that will bring workmen, polishing mills, shipping facilities, new buildings and, increased trade to this northern ter minus of the New York Central rail- road. It ia in recognition of this fact that the board of trade of this village last Thursday aftermoon presented Mr. Fmery with a resolution at his beau- tiful summer home on Calumet Is- land expressing the appreciation of the town for his incessant efforts to build up this section of the Thousand Is lands and his contemplated enterprise in operating the Picton granite quar- ries. The resolution exvressed also the hope thay the workmen who will be brought here to engage in quar rying will be located in the village and become a permanent addition to the local population. Mr. Emery has replied that he will comply "with this request as soon as can secure adequate facilities in the way of ship- ping wharfs and other transportation necessities, It is probable that the polishing plant will be located at the eastern boundary of Clayton at Steeles Point, where Mr. Emery recently pur- chased several pieces of property. A switch from the main branch of the railroad can easily be run to this point and insure good transporta- tion. H dock room can be secured in Clayton additional shipping facilities will be located here. Now that 'the board of trade has awakened public interest in this rroject M is sxbected that every assistamoe will be given the enterprise of which Clayton is to se cure partial benefit The granite of Picton Island, or Rob- lin's Island, as it has been called of late, is pronounced to be perfect. No seams can be found, and it is said that monoliths seventy-five feet high can easily be cut from the bed. Ac cording to the estimate of the experts who have examined the quarry, a thousand men working as many years cannot exhaust the rock. The granite i® now on exhibition in small quan- tities It takées a high piano polish, and is of a rich red color In response to the invitation of the board of trade last week Mr. Emery outlined the plans to the commitier wh he has under consideration for the up-building of the Thousand Is- lend region adjoining Clayton. and Frontenac. Among other projects he rroposes to build on Grindstone Is land, adjacent to the channel separat ing Picton Island, a colony of summer cottages, where guests may come and locate with assurance that quiet and recreation can be found large clubhouse, with complete culinary de- partment for use of all the residents, will be centrally located. Modern con ces will ba installed upon the amd every effort made to cater cottagers enterprises which Mr. Emery has in mind involve vast resources antl a broad comprehension of the possibilities that exist in this portion of the Lawrence. MARRIAGE DEADHEADS. Notices That Are Good For the Waste Basket. The Whig was requested the other day to publish a long and fulsome account of a country wedding as be ing "pews." This was accounted a neat way of avoiding the fee for a marriage notice. Why did not the happy father of the bride and the convince the clergyman happy man that the ceremony was - a pleasure: able excitement, and an interesting diversion with a supper thrown in, and thus evade his fee also? Why did not the bride's mother explain bow lovely the bride's clothes would Jock and what a fretclass advertisapent they would be for the t, and desire the clothes free? | The mamiage account fold of the lovely bride, the sumptuous repest, the puswrous and beautiful presents, denoting the respect in which the popular lady is held, and was ended by wishes for the happiness of the young couple.
