There is much diseussion among the military men of Toronto over the action of Col, Denison, the police magiktrate, in drdering a squad of soldiers from the Stanley Barracks to. remove their caps in his court. The policemen, in court, wear their caps. Why not the military men ? Col. Denison offers an explanation. He says he argued this issue about nineteen years ago and he satisfied the military authorities then that he was right. Had the squad aforesaid been sent for by hin, and they been in his court at his invitation, they would have been warranted in wear- ing their caps. But so far as he is concerned they were present as spec- | tators. The offender, a soldior, charged with Heo the police for a and he was before a civil authority. ' 3, ed du AUGUST 4. Cornwall, Aug. 4-It is not often that any one in this section is charg- ed with failure to observe the Lord's day = and consequenily considerable interest was "aroused by the charge laid against. Mr. Bronson, a farmer, who was accused of buildipg a fence, hauling in' and unloading "hay on a Sunday. : ' The case came up before D. Davis, police magistrate, Mr. Rronson's soli- citor, Robert Smith, held that the Lord's day act of the consolidated satutes of Upper Canada did. not lace farmers in the class. of persons prohibited from labor on Sunday, and that the privy council had declared the Ontario legislation on this point ultra vires, The magistrate agreed with this, and said that as he understood the law he could not convict the accused. J. C. Milligan, who appearcd for the Lord's Day Alliance, admitted that the privy councils decision had so far remained unrevoked. In view of this and the magistrates opinion, he withdrew the case. Mr. Branson says that all he did on the Sunday in question was to repair a gate and unload one waggon load of hay, so that another, which was in the yard might be hauled under cover. FAST IN GLASS CASE. Throws Up Contract After Get- ting Whiff of National Dish. Berlin, Aug. 4.--In the city of Bo chum, Westphalia, a professional fast er recently agreed to remain nineteen days in a glass case and take no food exeept an occasional sip of mineral water for that space of time, in con sideration of the sum of $600 as com pensation. The fasting had already lasted seve ral days and many persons had visit ed" the place to see that the -agrec- ment was carried out, when a wag sat himself down in frout of the hun- gry exhibit and peacefully began to consume an appetizing portion of pork and beans. The sight was too much for the pro- fessional, who smashed the glass in front of his cage and threw up the contract rather than deny himself the immediate enjovment of the Westpha linn national dish.
